Beaches

Indian Rocks Beach has public beach access and free parking and usually less crowded than Clearwater and St. Pete beaches. "Just a brief drive from Tampa or St. Petersburg, Indian Rocks Beach offers nearly three miles of beautiful and accessible beaches along the glittering Gulf of Mexico. The city's tourist population is one of its greatest assets, as people come from all over the world to visit Indian Rocks Beach for the city's fine beaches and to watch the beautiful sunsets. The city has 27 beach access points along Gulf Boulevard. Also found within Indian Rocks Beach are several retail businesses and quaint restaurants for your pleasure."

One of the most beautiful beaches in the world! "There’s more to St. Pete Beach than the Don CeSar, a luxury resort where many a celebrity has slept since its opening in 1928. In fact, St. Pete Beach offers up a variety of accomodations, but the small-town feel isn’t lost. Spend some time along Corey Avenue, browsing boutiques, sampling restaurants and mingling with the locals at events such as wine tastings and an annual arts and crafts festival. Corey Avenue is book-ended by the Gulf and Boca Ciega Bay, so you can count on established waterfront restaurants. And do pay the Don CeSar a visit – its palatial pink profile is iconic along these bright-white shores."

Neighborhoods

"Tarpon Springs was settled in the mid-1800s, as the railroad brought visitors from the north. Greek sponge divers later developed Tarpon Springs' famed sponge diving industry in the very early 1900s. Greek divers, who originally settled in the Keys, found they could harvest the more desirable wool sponges in the deeper and colder waters of the Gulf of Mexico. The atmosphere here is still heavily Greek – and there is still plenty to do to celebrate sponging, like strolling the sponge docks along the Anclote River and observing a live sponging exhibition. When it’s time to eat, you gotta go Greek. Then, venture into the adjacent downtown (it’s listed in the National Register of Historic Places) for more food, plus art galleries and specialty shops. St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Cathedral, a replica of St. Sophia Cathedral in Constantinople, welcomes visitors, too."

"There is so much more to explore in Ybor! It’s not just Tampa’s playground, it’s historically different with a thriving influx of growing corporations and small businesses, eclectic retail stores, diverse restaurants and a growing number of new residential units for people calling Ybor City home. Conveniently located just northeast of downtown, Ybor City is the only neighborhood on Florida’s west coast to be designated a National Historic Landmark District. Founded by Vicente Martinez-Ybor, the district has enjoyed a rich and diverse culture for more than a century. Ybor’s 7th Avenue, the main commercial thoroughfare was recognized as one of the '10 Great Streets in America'! Don’t just take our word for it, explore Ybor City today..." Check out the bars and restaurants with craft beers and the cigar-making shops.

"This is a best-of-both-worlds kind of place; its waterfront downtown is packed with original restaurants, shops and artsy stops. The 38-plus-mile Pinellas Trail cuts through, with access to Dunedin’s bike rentals and refreshments. The No. 1 beach in the nation in 2008 (according to Dr. Stephen P. Leatherman, a.k.a. Dr. Beach), Caladesi Island State Park, lies off the coast. Take the ferry or a private boat from Honeymoon Island State Park to experience it, though the sight of striated blue water meeting sky is equally spectacular within both parks. Need another reason to love Dunedin? Its Scottish heritage brings an annual Celtic festival and Highland games."

"Weeki Wachee is an enchanted spring where you can see live mermaids, take a trip on a river boat cruise, learn about Florida wildlife, and swim in the pristine waters at Buccaneer Bay. You can also embark on a paddling adventure down the pristine waterway of the Weeki Wachee River."

"Clearwater Marine Aquarium staff and volunteers work each day to rescue marine life and provide the most advanced and effective care to maximize the opportunity to return sick or injured animals to their homes. The animals that come through our doors arrive because they are suffering from an illness or severe injury. Many of our animals are found by local residents, fishermen, park rangers or even visitors to the area."

Dolphin-watching is a popular activity!

"If the aquarium just doesn’t scratch that marine itch, one of the undisputed best things to do in Clearwater is watching bottlenose dolphin pods pierce the surface in their natural habitat. Several packages — such as the catamaran or tugboat-based tours — allow eager travelers to get within arm’s reach of these beautiful ocean-dwelling mammals!"

If you're headed to the beach plan to leave early to avoid the worst traffic.
