Very close to Casita Verde and next door to one of my fave flower and gift shops, the space is large, bright (pun intended) and inviting. They offer a variety of sophisticated and interesting coffees.

If you’re in the mood to take stroll to earn your first cup of coffee for the day, Gravves is the perfect location. It’s a Goth vibe, which is kind of fun and different. The coffee and pastries are great.

Pulp has been a coffee roaster for awhile but now offers an awesome cafe experience tucked into a corner of its warehouse. This is probably the most sophisticated coffee experience in SA. And, they do coffee making demonstrations, classes, and events.

Food scene

Open Thursday-Saturday for dine-in or take out dinner, Peggy and Paul offer a truly unique dining experience. Right in the middle of the historic Alta Vista neighborhood, they have both a small, cozy indoor dining room and an awesome outdoor covered patio. The weekly menu features an appetizer, one meat option, one vegetarian option, two or three dessert options, beer, and wine. For dine-in, you’ll want to make a reservation. Hands down, one of our fave SA places!

Quintessentially San Antonio, La Fonda will not disappoint. They have the best patio in town, which they just expanded. They serve a good mix of Tex Mex and traditional Mexican dishes. The bartender knows how to make authentic margaritas, palomas, and ranch waters. You’ll probably want to make a reservation, especially on weekends.

If you’re craving Italian comfort food, this is your place. Within walking distance of Casita Verde, you can pick up pizza (we like the 09-er) or eat there. Their Caesar salad and spaghetti and meatballs are solid.

If you want an alternative to Tex-Mex or Mexican food while visiting SA, and you love Creole food with a modern twist, then this is your place! Also, the bungalow has been amazingly restored and tastefully decorated. It’s a special occasion place, but well worth it!

We love Mediterranean style food, and Ladino definitely delivers in that category! It is in the top three of our favorite San Antonio restaurants. The food is inventive and fresh, the service is fantastic, and both the indoor and outdoor dining areas are awesome.

Sightseeing

Brackenridge is San Antonio’s Central Park. You can walk the trails, splash in the San Antonio River, and explore the Japanese Garden for free! You also can take the kiddos to ride the train, see the animals at the zoo, and enjoy the rides at Kiddie Park.

One aspect of San Antonio that we don’t think gets enough attention is all the green spaces and parks. Phil Hardberger Park offers something for everyone. There are birding viewing stations, a nature center, a dog park, playgrounds, miles of accessible hiking/biking/walking trails. And, of course, the very cool recently-built land bridge.

San Pedro Creek Culture Park, Southwest of Casita Verde, is a hidden gem, and not crowded. There are several landmarks such as the Spanish Governor’s Palace along the route. There also is awesome artwork and native vegetation.

Breakfast and brunch

Breakfast is Clay’s favorite meal and brunch is Kim’s favorite meal. Here are some of our SA faves.
Extra Fine has yummy sweets and satisfying but rich savories for breakfast. Their coffee and other breakfast drinks are solid. And, their fresh-baked sourdough loaf is great to take home. They also have creative and tasty desserts. Extra Fine is within walking distance of Casita Verde.

Don’t be confused by the inconspicuous storefront facing McCullough. And don’t sleep in if you want crowd-favorite savory flavors. The sweet options like Mexican hot chocolate and grapefruit are yummy too. The variety of options are quintessentially San Antonio.

Garcia’s is by far our favorite breakfast taco source. They are known for their brisket taco, which is indescribably awesome! We also love their bean and cheese tacos, but you can’t go wrong with any of their breakfast taco options. Their corn and flour tortillas are homemade and oh-so-good! They are takeout only but well worth the short drive.

As close to France as you’ll get in Texas, this charming small establishment on the outskirts of downtown is owned and run by a French family. The chocolate croissant and ham and cheese croissant are awesome as are all the egg dishes. And don’t forget to bring home a baguette to have with dinner!

Museum

The former home of Marion Kugler McNay, this small jewel of a museum sits on beautiful grounds and is itself a piece of art designed by famous Texas architect Atlee Ayers. It is the oldest modern art museum in Texas. Unusual and unique pieces from Stieglitz Circle artists, French Impressionists, as well as living masters such as Vincent Valdez make this a museum worth visiting.

Bar

Little Death is located on North St. Mary’s Street, known for its funky variety of bars, restaurants, and live music venues. Offering one of the most eclectic assortments of wine, including organic and all natural wines, as well as beer, you can enjoy a glass or a bottle with some tasty snacks there, or buy a bottle to take home.

Located in the Blue Star Art Complex south of downtown on the river, Bar 1919 is a modern day speakeasy. Walk downstairs and through the door and you might think you’re in a more urbane city like New York, LA, or even Houston. There are sofas and comfortable chairs nestled in corners, but the best seat in the house is at the bar where you can chat up the bartenders, all true masters of their craft. Do not expect frozen margarita machines here. They have one of the largest selection of bourbons we’ve ever seen!

Not many folks realize that San Antonio has a vibrant jazz music scene. One of the most unique and vibrant jazz music venues is Jazz, TX. It is in the cellar of one of the original Pearl Brewery buildings. You go downstairs and through a red velvet curtain into an intimate and inviting setting perfect for hearing everything from Doc Watkins, the owner, playing the piano with his usual gusto, to guest artists such as jazz guitarist Bill Frisell. The drinks are excellent and the food is pretty darn good too.
