Tyneham Village - where time stopped in 1943... Often referred to as Dorset’s ‘lost’ village, only the memories of who used to live here now remain. The village was evacuated in December 1943 during WWII and has been deserted ever since. The area was needed for military training but after the war ended, the villagers were not allowed to return. You can still see some of the original buildings and read about what village life used to be like. Both the restored Church and School buildings are still intact and have exhibitions about the village and villagers. The exhibitions are open from 10am until 4pm when the village is open to the public. At Tyneham Farm, some of the outbuildings have been restored and there is a picnic area to enjoy.

If you’re interested in marine wildlife, Kimmeridge Bay is one of the best destinations in the country. The beach here is the best place to access the Purbeck Marine Wildlife Reserve. With an absence of sand the water visibility at Kimmeridge is excellent making it understandably popular with snorkelers and divers. You don’t have to get in the water to see some of the marine life on offer here. There are an abundance of rockpools teeming with crabs, anemones, fish and some lovely colourful varieties of seaweed. As part of the Jurassic Coastline Kimmeridge is of geological interest; the rocks on the beach contain a variety of interesting fossils and the area is also home to one of England’s only oil wells.

The first stone of Corfe Castle was laid more than 1,000 years ago. Since then it’s seen its fair share of battles, mysteries and plots. It’s been a treasury, military garrison, royal residence and family home. Part of the National Trust and with wonderful walks for all.
