City/town information

This is a perfect small Texas not so big town of about 57,000 wonderful people. The town hosts wonderful events year round. In Landa Park in the summer there are free out door concerts. All holidays are marked with a parade through downtown and in the park you can ride the small railroad through the park and feet the ducks along the route. Given its German roots Octoberfest is a full out event each fall. A wonderful way to get from the house to New Braunfels is taking River Road out of Sattler near the dam and following it into town. From our driveway to the downtown park it is about 30 minutes.

Truly a tourist destination. Park at the square and walk through the shops and find a place to eat. Free parking is everywhere and the craft shops are amazing. There are several recreational opportunities in Wimberley which draw folks from around the state and country. Check out the Blue Hole for sure. Time from our driveway to the square is about 25 minutes.

A great family spot all day and into the evening at the dancehall. Most every day there is a free outdoor music presentation from 1-5 p.m. under the shade trees at picnic tables. No cover and no pressure to buy drinks or food but both are available if you walk up and ask for them. From here a great little in the middle of no where place next to Old Tunnel State Park is Alamo Springs Cafe. This has been featured on the statewide travel shows several times. Check it out. Luckenbach is 45 minutes from our driveway via Blanco, Texas.

A destination spot and a tourist mecca. Home of the San Antonio Riverwalk, the Alamo and the Texas Mission Trail. Too much here to mention but a trip to downtown and the river is a must for any visitor to Texas. Time from our driveway to the Alamo is about 55 minutes.

Sightseeing

This is a wonderful place for a family visit. The oldest dancehall in Texas is under the water tower next to the Grist Mill Restaurant. Many shops to visit, places to eat and a load of free outdoor entertainment daily even at the dancehall. There is always something going on in Gruene. Time from our driveway to the water tower is 35 minutes

This is home to the second largest bat colony in Texas second to the Congress River Bridge in Austin. The ranger puts on a wonderful presentation and at just the right moment from out of nowhere the bats swarm. Check before you come as the bats are not there in all month.

President Johnson called this his Texas White House and it is a wonderful place to visit and tour his family home and see behind the scenes what went on with the Secret Service and other departments in order to make this ranch a political H. Q. for America. Across Texas Park 1 is the Texas State Park and it has its own visitor center. One of the odd things about this stop is that depending on what side of the river you visit (and do both) it is either a state or federal property. Visit both sides and tour the childhood home and the one room school house where Johnson signed educational bills into law.
