Your typical Aussie historical building dining place! Very cosy yet maintains its historical feeling. It feels like your having your meal back in the 1940s. This is my go to place for quality steaks! I really can't recommend this place highly enough. Be sure to ring and make a reservation as it is very popular.

Ciao Cielo used to occupy 171 Bay Street in Port Melbourne. It was a petite and well-respected restaurant with a clutch of loyal regulars. But in May 2018 it moved down the road into a courthouse dating to 1860. Over the years the heritage-listed building has housed a nursery, a tile store and most recently Argentinian restaurant Corte. The space has been transformed into a striking dining room that seats 80. The courthouse’s cracked sandstone walls, wooden rafters and pine floorboards remain; a long stone bar and blue leather banquettes are new additions. A working fireplace illuminates the restaurant at night.

In an out-of-the-way converted warehouse in the back streets of South Melbourne is St Ali, the headquarters of an ambitious coffee operation with plans for world domination (almost). Mark Dundon opened St Ali in 2005 and began roasting coffee to supply the cafe and a handful of retail customers. He sold it all in 2008 and has since gone on to open the exceptional Seven Seeds.

Regulars at Andrew’s don't have time for burgers that come with descriptions such as “gourmet” or “healthy”. They prefer their meat sandwiches the old-school way, like your local fish ‘n’ chip shop used to do. Andrew’s has had them covered since 1939, long before wasabi mayo, guacamole and other fancy fillings had ever reached our shores.

At Clooney you’re greeted by dark walls, purple-velvet booths and low lights. It’s moody and serious like an old-fashioned speakeasy, but to call it that would be to miss the point. While the drinks list here does include some cocktail classics, there’s also a focus on bright, citrusy drinks. Bartender Will Crennan (ex-Gin Palace, Collins Quarter) likes drinks that are “pretty, with balance and colour”, and is working alongside Shannon McFarland (ex-The General Assembly, The Rochester) to create the cocktails. The Duck Fat Martini is duck-fat-washed vodka and dry sake steeped in citrus and spicy botanicals. For the Oaxaca Tea, a water bath infuses liqueur with apple and green tea. It’s then mixed with white mezcal, served with ice and applewood smoke. The classics – Negroni, Manhattan and other usual suspects – and a page for Holiday Cocktails show Clooney is not too proud to celebrate the Margaritas and Pina Coladas of this world.

At Colonial Brewing Co., you might forget you’re indoors. It’s filled with sun umbrellas and trees, a glass garage door at the front, and lights strung above. There’s an open-air feel to the space. The spacious brewery floor allows for a view right down the rows of stainless-steel tanks. They look great in daylight, and even better when the sun falls and they’re lit from above. A simple food menu offers a range designed to smash and share over a beer: burgers, wings and pizzas all appear.

Starward Whisky’s first home was a disused hangar at Essendon Airport. This new headquarters opened at the end of 2016, with four times as much space. In full flight, it can pump out 1000 litres of spirit a day – that’s 2000 bottles of whisky. Melbourne’s climate gives Starward whiskies a distinct flavour profile. Whereas Scottish or Irish whiskies can easily take a decade to mature, local whiskies benefit from the whole four-seasons-in-one-day thing. The barrels are constantly expanding and contracting, extracting flavour and evaporating alcohol more quickly. Starward’s two main offerings are its solera and wine-cask editions.
