Eating out in Midhurst

Stroll to Comestibles for breakfast or a light lunch or sit outside the Cowdray Café or Gartons Coffee House on a summer’s day. Ice cream from Fitzcane’s is always a treat. If your preference is for a country pub the Royal Oak at West Lavington is also within walking distance (just!) and has a large garden with views to the South Downs. It’s a great choice for Sunday lunch if you don’t want to take the car. Enjoy Italian food and wine at Fratellis without worrying about the very short walk home!

If you fancy walking the scenic route, head into Midhurst and go straight ahead on to West Street when you come to the roundabout. At the end of West Street cross Edinburgh Square and slightly to your left you will see St. Ann's Hill. Go through the gate at the end and up the steps (and down the other side!) Follow the path straight ahead with the River Rother to your right past the Cowdray Ruins. You will see a path straight ahead of you which runs along the edge of the Polo fields (Polo fields to your right) After a short while, the Cowdray Farm Shop & Cafe can be found on the left.

You can walk here in around 20 minutes (it's about 1 mile). Turn right at the end of the lane. At the roundabout go straight ahead. At the end of the road (The Spread Eagle Hotel is to your right) turn right. Bear left when you get to the end of the road (A286 towards Chichester) and the pub is a short way up on your left.

Walking & Cycling in Midhurst

Leave the car at home and explore Midhurst Common (turn right at our gate), meander along the River Rother (2.8 miles) or follow the Woolbeding and Easebourne walking trail (10 miles) all directly from your front door. Enjoy the surrounding countryside from a different perspective atop an e-bike hired from All Ride Now.
River Rother Walk (2.8 miles) I would recommend following the route backwards. We usually begin by turning right at our gate and proceeding to the top of the lane. Continue up the track to the right of the cemetery. Take the path to your right where the houses and gardens end. When you come to the clearing proceed straight across and follow the path downhill to the A272. The half Moon pub is opposite (stage 8 on the map).

Days out in Midhurst

Potter around Midhurst’s quirky independent shops, watch polo at Cowdray Park or learn to play at the Polo Academy. Experience fly fishing on the River Rother, clay shooting at the Hownhall Shooting School or golf at Cowdray Park Golf Club (all bookable through the Cowdray Estate website) Wander around Woolbeding Gardens or indulge in a spa day at The Spread Eagle Hotel. Watch the sunset from sunset hill (turn right out of our gate and continue onto Midhurst Common at the top of the lane with the cemetery to your left, shortly after a left hand bend you will see a house called Cherries to your left. Turn right here and keep going until you come to a viewing point with a bench, this is sunset hill. Continue in the same direction when you are ready to return and you will have taken a loop back to Cherries) or enjoy a moonlit picnic at nearby Iping Common and explore star studded skies with the SkyView app whilst snugly wrapped in blankets (the South Downs National Park became an International Dark Sky Reserve in May 2016)
