The aim is to protect, research, preserve, restore and introduce Northern Estonian coastal nature, landscape and cultural heritage to the public and promote its sustainable development for maintaining the balanced use of the environment. It covers 74 784 ha, of this 47 910 ha land area. The national park has been included in Natura 2000 network of the European Union Importance as a Bird and Nature Site.
