Το όνομά του ο ξενώνας το πήρε από την Σεμέλη, κόρη του βασιλιά Κάδμου και της Αρμονίας. Την Σεμέλη την ερωτεύτηκε ο Δίας όπου γέννησαν τον Διόνυσο των θεό των αμπελιών της χαράς και του γλεντιού.
