Það sem verður gert

We will walk from the Angus Buchanan Recreation Ground on the outskirts of Coleford (where there is free parking) to Symonds Yat Rock view point along a linear return route. There will be an opportunity to briefly stop half way for refreshments and facilities if required. The Walk is approx 8.5 miles long and is mostly on good tracks and footpaths, although some areas are on tracks which can be very muddy after wet weather. It may be possible to glimpse Sugarloaf mountain In the distance (in Wales) on a clear day. Buzzards are often seen in the area and at certain times of year you can see wildflowers and sometimes Newts in a stream! We are likely to see evidence of wild boar damage to grass verges etc., but I personally haven’t encountered any when I’ve walked this route. Once we reach the viewpoint there is a snack cabin and facilities nearby. You can bring a picnic and use the benches provided if you prefer. We will go to the viewpoint and get wonderful views down over the Wye Valley and the beautiful river Wye, where British tourism started in the eighteenth century. Bring a camera / make sure your phone is charged! There are often RSPB volunteers at the viewpoint with scopes trained on Peregrine Falcons that nest in the cliff face. We will rest for a while before retracing our steps back to Coleford. There is one short steep uphill section on the return journey.
Other things to note
Please wear suitable footwear such as walking boots and bring a walking pole/s if these help you and a drink. A picnic rug may be helpful for when we reach our destination as all benches may be taken. You may like to bring lightweight binoculars and a camera.

I’ve lived in the Forest of Dean area for almost 5 years and have explored many of the public footpaths during that time, enjoying the nature and beautiful scenery all around here. I have knowledge of local off road walking routes where peace and quiet may be found among Forestry Commission land.
