Food Scene

They have really good gluten-free pasta, especially for a restaurant that’s gluten-free. Their menu changes every day, so some days you can get a burger on a surprisingly delicious roll and others it might be salmon avocado toast. The setting inside the Passage des Panoramas is warm and friendly, with deep blue banquettes and wooden tables. The place is very small—come with one or two friends. And afterwards stop by the grocery store across the way, where you can buy all their products. I love their infusions!

It’s a great organic canteen in the 11th arrondissement where I take my daughter Lou to teach her about a healthy diet. The setting is simple, but it has a cool industrial vibe with wooden and steel chairs. Everything is delicious, but their lasagna made with tempeh and seasonal vegetables is very clever.

What I love most about this gluten-free bakery is that they use natural yeast and organic flours. I often struggle to find products of this quality. I always get the focaccia. C’est magnifique! Unlike most traditional bakeries in Paris, it’s possible to sit and eat at Chambelland rather than just picking up one of their tarts and bringing it home. You can even order a coffee.

The atmosphere at this trendy café in the Marais is so bright and light—there are plants everywhere! It’s a real California scene. Since I’m very careful about the origin of the products that I eat and cook with, I appreciate that they don’t use any processed food, additives, refined sugars, or even dairy products and GMOs. The smoothies are not cheap at €9, but the Smooth Green, with kale, banana, spirulina, vanilla, coconut water, and lemon, is very refreshing. And don’t miss out on the kale chips—they’re addictive!

I love the concept of a Japanese bento: a sectioned tray featuring a few different dishes. It’s playful for both adults and children. While the flavors here aren’t necessarily Asian, the health-focused dishes in the bento are always seasonal and change daily. I don’t eat meat, so I choose one of their fish or vegetarian options. Generally, Nanashi only offers one meat, one fish, and one vegetarian option each day—and that’s it. They display the ingredients they’re using on the blackboard. For only €14, it’s worth discovering new flavors!

I support the philosophy of this café that seasons should be reflected in one’s diet. They cook root vegetables in winter and wait patiently for the arrival of certain fruits come summer. This way, when you eat your first cherry or avocado—ooh la la! It is worth it. They have another outpost around the block where you can order drinks and to-go food. There is often a wait at the larger café, especially on the weekends, so this mini-Season is great for taking a meal or a juice to enjoy among nature at the nearby Square du Temple.

This grocery-restaurant is about biodiversity, local production, and harmony. It is not so easy to be Zen every day, and like many people, I let myself get carried away by stress. But walking into this bright yellow space, with simple Scandinavian design elements, it is easy to feel cheerful. Yuman posts their menu on their Facebook page an hour or so before lunchtime, so you can decide whether the daily dishes appeal to you before heading over.

Every morning I drink a centrifuged juice on an empty stomach, 20 minutes before breakfast. When my schedule doesn’t allow me to make it at home, I get delivery from this shop. They have really funny names for their cold-pressed juices, like “Beet It,” “Mister K,” and “Icy Twist,” which has fennel, kiwi, mint, pineapple, and chia seeds in it. While the 2nd arrondissement shop has the biggest selection, other restaurants in Paris offer their juices as well, like the Mediterranean-focused Filakia. You can also order from Juicerie on Deliveroo, the popular delivery service.

Healthy restaurants seem to grow like mushrooms in the Marais—but the more the merrier. They make their own cold-pressed juices and offer organic breakfasts and lunches. Dishes may contain quinoa or whole grain tabbouleh with ripe avocado or a butternut squash served like a steak with grilled zucchini. They are not only concerned about the body, but the planet, too. All their plastic-type packaging is actually biodegradable and compostable. The juice bottles are glass, and if you bring them back, they’ll recycle them for you.

My colleague introduced me to this takeaway window in the 1st arrondissement. It’s near many offices, so people who work close by come in for healthy food prepared slowly—to be eaten fast. It is incredible how they plate the meals—even when they’re to-go—with beautiful edible flowers and sauces drizzled like paint! The owner, Angèle Ferreux-Maeght, is popular among the fashion set and has catered many chic events. She comes from a well-known family of art dealers and publishers, and before opening this small canteen, she published a cookbook called “Deliciously Green.”
