Sightseeing

This is a 100-foot-long colorful polka dot wall in the South Arts District, near the corner of 6th and Mateo. It’s a popular place where a lot of influencers will meet up with photographers to do a photo shoot. If you’re lucky, you might see some of this going down when you visit. Go early in the morning or right around sunset to get optimal lighting.

On the corner of Rose and Speedway, this piece has become known as the #SelfieWall and is one of the most Instagrammable spots in the city. The installation changes on a monthly basis, so it’s worth a visit every time you come to LA. It’s centrally located, so it’s a great starting point for a day of wandering around Venice. Afterwards, hit the Venice Ale House right around the corner for a Longboard Lager and one of the best people watching vantage points in the entire city.

This project was an initiative of Beautiful Earth, a nonprofit mural arts organization—they worked with a whole bunch of different local street artists to paint the roll-up doors of 30 businesses on Hollywood Blvd. I’d say the best time to check them out is at night, when all of the businesses have closed up shop. If you post a photo of any of the pieces, be sure to tag the artist and they’ll probably like your picture.

This 60,000-square-foot space with pieces by world-renowned artists is a street-art mecca. With more than 50 murals in one location, this is quite literally one of the best collections of street art in the world. Artists from all across the globe travel here to admire the work and leave their own mark. From here, head to The Resident, a really cool hybrid of a beer garden, bar, and music venue. The owners of this place are as eclectic as the customers they serve, and they fit right in in the Arts District.

Arts & Culture

Outside of the entrance to the museum is an installation by Chris Burden called Urban Light. About 200 streetlights are distributed to create a grid-like effect with the museum’s facade and some palm trees in the background. It’s often quite busy, but it’s definitely large enough to get a shot of yourself inside the installation. Have a friend lie on the ground inside the installation, point the camera up, and snap a few shots to get the best photo.

Food Scene

Right near the famous Melrose Place, the wall outside of this coffee shop features murals by different local artists. I’d recommend popping in for a coffee, then taking a walk to explore the art. Around here it’s metered parking only, but it should be pretty easy to find a spot.

Parks & Nature

Along with an amazing hike, this park also has a ton of excellent street art. If you park near the entrance off North Fuller Ave. and start walking towards the trail, you’ll see an abundance of art on the ground, walls, and sidewalk. It’s a high-traffic area, so the art on display is always getting updated. Take the hour to trek to the top for breathtaking views. In my opinion, the best art in LA is the landscape of the city as seen from atop these hills.

Drinks & Nightlife

The whole building is an active canvas, and it’s always completely covered in street art. It’s in the heart of the Arts District, and there’s a massive permanent wheatpaste of an elderly person’s face along with a Shepard Fairey piece nearby. It’s a fully functioning brewery, so after you check out the art outside, head in and grab a beer. Around the corner is EightyTwo, a great classic arcade with a bunch of retro video games, pinball machines, and really good craft cocktails.
