Drinks & Nightlife

It's my local haunt, with a great vibe and great all rounder within a few minutes walk. Snuggle up by the fire inside, sink into a lounge and sip a Melbourne latte, or enjoy local cider on tap in the beer garden. Come friday evenings, and the brass fitted hipster cafe turns into a dance floor, a great place to get your groove on. They serve some of the best coffee in Melbourne, and for those needing early starts or late nights this iconic Melbourne coffee house is perfect. Great breakfasts menu until 2pm, and I highly recommend the crumbed panko eggs with sides of bacon or greens. But beware, their addictive coffee shuts at 4pm, even though the cafe/bar rocks till the early hours. For peace and quiet, nuzzle into the secret nooks during the day.

The great pub was renovated a few years to include great local music, pool tables, a fine menu (I recommend the lamb shanks!), and an easy vibe. If you're lucky, you'll meet some of Melbourne's artists in hiding.

This industrial feel secret spot is a relaxed place to wind down or escape. Definitely a bar for beer rather than wine, with lots of bottles and cans on offer but a limited choice of wine, although i have had a great glass here. Warehouse conversion - high ceilings, exposed brick - with wine barrels for tables, pool table in the corner and food vans at weekends parked out the back. Can get very busy and noisy at weekends but a good place to kick back outside those key hours.

One of Fitzroy's best cafes, Addict's breakfast and brunch menu offers creative takes on the classics (we love the corn fritters with kasundi, haloumi and poached eggs), while lunch is anything but boring. Hop over to Addict and meet the team for a cuppa. You'll be addicted to this sun-drenched corner cafe. However, expect a wait for a table. Shuts around 4pm daily.

If you've never tried a Philly cheese steak, then now is your chance. Check out this secret spot for a relaxed beverage, superb live local music, and cheese fries. Fitzroy's locals best secret, this little bar has already won awards for the way it serves craft beer and good booze without pretension. Coupled with Sparrow's proper Philladelphia Cheesesteaks open until late. The beer garden isn't heated well though, so bring a warm jacket if cold outside.

Popular Melbourne haunt for the hungry and health conscious. On offer is a wide selection of delicious vegan and vegetarian food of all types, including raw meals. Enjoy the community of artists here and be sure to look at the raw cakes. For peace and quiet try odd hours like 2pm. Otherwise, be sure to get there early - there's always an eager crowd trying to get in! For those willing, enjoy space at the communal table. Open for breakfast, lunch and dinner 7 days a week. Say hi to Billy from me.

For spectacular coffee and great service, check out this buzzing cafe in the backstreets of Collingwood. An army of grinders hold a variety of Proud Mary's own blends and single origins, roasted a block away at Aunty Peg's. These can be enjoyed via cold drip, V60, AeroPress and espresso. Be prepared to wait at busy times for tables.

Doesn't look much on the outside, but walk through the entrance of this seedy looking pub. The beer garden will delightful surprise you. A gorgeous indoor garden retreat, with great beers on tap, and bronze and glass decor for the hipster in you. Check out their website for weekly specials. But don't be confused by the Terminus in Clifton Hill, or on the south side.

Sightseeing

Abbotsford Convent Art District has it all. It is a historic site on the stunning Yarra River, with nature walks, and gorgeous open gardens. On the site there's great food at Cam's, which doubles as an art gallery. The bakery next door is divine, stop in there for a treat. Around the corner is the Japanese Soul Bar, with yummy chicken soup. Lentils for Anything is a vegetarian pay as you feel restaurant, a local haunt for the artist crew, and feeds many disadvantaged people. Great family vibe of community spirit, with pop up jazz bands on Sundays and regular local musicians. The Collingwood Childrens' Farm has a petting zoo, and has organic farmers markets every forth Saturday. The halls hold dance classes, activities, and are ever changing. Check out there website for some more info.

This is the easiest local supermarket and liquor shop. They have a good range of food, products, and health items. Even a small organic section to keep the health food devotees happy. Be warned though, prices are a bit higher here to compensate for the connivence.

This is Melbourne's largest Health Food shop, and the place all the food conscious locals pour to from around Melbourne. Take the train towards clifton hill, and jump off at Westgarth Station. It's a five minute walk to Terra Madre from here. Be sure to take your own bags (or borrow my hessian ones from under the kitchen bench.) Beware, it can get very crowded at peak hours, but the lines move quickly and with smiles. While you're here, trams go up and down high street (with same Myki card), and this is another great tourist spot to check out.
