The Spanish Steps (Italian: Scalinata di Trinità dei Monti) are a set of steps in Rome, Italy, climbing a steep slope between the Piazza di Spagna at the base and Piazza Trinità dei Monti, dominated by the Trinità dei Monti church at the top. The monumental stairway of 135 steps (the slightly elevated drainage system is often mistaken for the first step) was built with French diplomat Étienne Gueffier’s bequeathed funds of 20,000 scudi, in 1723–1725, linking the Bourbon Spanish Embassy, and the Trinità dei Monti church that was under the patronage of the Bourbon kings of France, both located above — to the Holy See in Palazzo Monaldeschi located below. The stairway was designed by architects Francesco de Sanctis and Alessandro Specchi.

The Pantheon meaning "temple of every god" is a former Roman temple, now a church, in Rome, Italy, on the site of an earlier temple commissioned by Marcus Agrippa during the reign of Augustus (27 BC – 14 AD). The present building was completed by the emperor Hadrian and probably dedicated about 126 AD. He retained Agrippa's original inscription, which has confused its date of construction.[2] The building is circular with a portico of large granite Corinthian columns (eight in the first rank and two groups of four behind) under a pediment. A rectangular vestibule links the porch to the rotunda, which is under a coffered concrete dome, with a central opening (oculus) to the sky. Almost two thousand years after it was built, the Pantheon's dome is still the world's largest unreinforced concrete dome. The height to the oculus and the diameter of the interior circle are the same, 43.3 metres (142 ft). It is one of the best-preserved of all Ancient Roman buildings.

Piazza Navona is a beautiful square in Rome, Italy and it’s famous for its architecture, restaurants, and fountains. Every day you can find tourist eating at the many restaurants in the square and also taking pictures in front of the famous three fountains. The fountains have always fascinated me and I thought they would be an excellent topic to write about and photograph. Therefore, the fountains of Piazza Navona will be the main focus of this post. The three fountains in the square are the Fontana die Quattro Fiumi, the Fontana del Moro, and the Fontana del Nettuno. However, before I get to the fountains, it’s important to breifly touch on the history of Piazza Navona.

Piazza del Popolo is a large urban square in Rome. The name in modern Italian literally means "People's Square", but historically it derives from the poplars after which the church of Santa Maria del Popolo, in the northeast corner of the piazza, takes its name. The piazza lies inside the northern gate in the Aurelian Walls, once the Porta Flaminia of ancient Rome, and now called the Porta del Popolo. This was the starting point of the Via Flaminia, the road to Ariminum (modern-day Rimini) and the most important route to the north. At the same time, before the age of railroads, it was the traveller's first view of Rome upon arrival. For centuries, the Piazza del Popolo was a place for public executions, the last of which took place in 1826.

After an early morning at the Centro Storico's colourful Campo de' Fiori market, stroll three minutes to the Tiber and cross the river via the stone footbridge, Ponte Sisto, to reach Trastevere. Head towards Piazza di Santa Maria, the heart of this labyrinthine district; take Via del Moro, with its many shops and cafes, then divert into the quiet cobblestoned side streets lined with crumbling buildings with faded paintwork. Plants and religious shrines brighten up the streets, washing is strung up between buildings, and graffiti covers the shutters of closed bars. When you reach the piazza, join the locals, tourists and buskers and take a seat on the steps of the fountain – a great spot for people-watching. This lovely neighbourhood square is dominated by 12th-century Basilica di Santa Maria; step inside its dimly lit interior to see the glittering Cavallini mosaics depicting the font of oil that spouted when Christ was born – according to myth, the church was founded on that very spot.

The Papal Basilica of St. Peter in the Vatican (Italian: Basilica Papale di San Pietro in Vaticano), or simply St. Peter's Basilica is an Italian Renaissance church in Vatican City, the papal enclave within the city of Rome. Designed principally by Donato Bramante, Michelangelo, Carlo Maderno and Gian Lorenzo Bernini, St. Peter's is the most renowned work of Renaissance architecture and one of the largest churches in the world. While it is neither the mother church of the Catholic Church nor the cathedral of the Diocese of Rome, St. Peter's is regarded as one of the holiest Catholic shrines. It has been described as "holding a unique position in the Christian world"and as "the greatest of all churches of Christendom". Catholic tradition holds that the Basilica is the burial site of St. Peter, one of Christ's Apostles and also the first Pope; supposedly, St. Peter's tomb is directly below the high altar of the Basilica. For this reason, many Popes have been interred at St. Peter's since the Early Christian period. There has been a church on this site since the time of the Roman Emperor Constantine the Great. Construction of the present basilica, replacing the Old St. Peter's Basilica of the 4th century AD, began on 18 April 1506 and was completed on 18 November 1626.

The Roman Ghetto or Ghetto of Rome, Italian: Ghetto di Roma, was a Jewish ghetto established in 1555 in the Rione Sant'Angelo, in Rome, Italy, in the area surrounded by present-day Via del Portico d'Ottavia, Lungotevere dei Cenci, Via del Progresso and Via di Santa Maria del Pianto, close to the River Tiber and the Theatre of Marcellus. With the exception of brief periods under Napoleon from 1808 to 1815 and under the Roman Republics of 1798-99 and 1849, the ghetto of Rome was controlled by the papacy until the capture of Rome in 1870

Shopping

The three streets leading into the Piazza del Popolo — Via del Corso, Via del Babuino, Via Ripetta — and all the little cross streets in between — Via Condotti, Via Frattina, Via Borgognona — form a section of Rome called the Trident. It's the luxury center of the city, and one of the most exclusive and expensive shopping areas in the world. All the top names you can think of have stores here. Each of the streets has its own character. Via del Corso, always crowded with tourists and teenagers, is lined with chain stores and cheap boutiques until you get close to Piazza del Popolo, where the prices and quality shift upwards. Via del Babuino, which leads directly out of the Piazzza di Spagna, is the classiest of the three, full of designer labels and exclusive shops. Via Ripetta, the quietest street, is notable for a few ethnic shops, restaurants and wine bars. The side streets, Via Condotti and Via Bocca di Leone are a window shoppers heaven, the pages of Vogue magazine come to life in the displays. Via Frattina is friendly and accessible, with some lower-priced shops, a Swatch store, and a few shops selling fun gift items.

Parks & Nature

Villa Borghese is a landscape garden in the naturalistic English manner in Rome, containing a number of buildings, museums (see Galleria Borghese) and attractions. It is the third largest public park in Rome (80 hectares or 148 acres) after the ones of the Villa Doria Pamphili and Villa Ada. The gardens were developed for the Villa Borghese Pinciana ("Borghese villa on the Pincian Hill"), built by the architect Flaminio Ponzio, developing sketches by Scipione Borghese, who used it as a villa suburbana, a party villa, at the edge of Rome, and to house his art collection. The gardens as they are now were remade in the early nineteenth century.

Etablì: ... In a 15th century building just off Piazza Navona... old wrought-iron chandeliers fronted by ancient stone and tuff ashlar portals under arched or wooden ceilings, lavander and pastel colours, antique furnishings and ornaments from Southern France, including the carpenters’ old Provençal benches, the établis ... This is the suggestive setting for the restaurant and winebar “Etabli” in the heart of Rome’s historic center, by now a “must” for Romans. Etabli is so armoniously decorated, so well done you may have the impression of being in a plushy living room drawing its charm from a minimalist, fake “shabby-chic” rather elegant decor. In the dining rooms (open 7pm to midnight) you will be tempted by the imaginative Chef’s refined and creative fish or meat dishes and home-made desserts: a Roman/Mediterranean cuisine though of International flavour joined by excellent wines wisely selected for palates careful to balance cost and quality.
