summer season vantage point Accessed by the Schynige Platte Cogwheel Railway, the station at Schynige Platte lies at 2076m. A beautiful mountain area with views of celebrity peaks: Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau. Start point for local short trails and longer hikes to Loucherhorn, Faulhorn or First. The Alpine Garden is an added attraction. Only accessible in summer season. Alpine Garden: ’The Alpine Garden displays over 650 labelled species and is easy to reach, situated next to the summit station of the Schynige Platte Mountain Railway (roundwalk about 500 metres, altitude difference about 40m). An exhibition presents several important aspects of Alpine vegetation ecology in relation to geology, fauna and the influence exerted by man. Videos on the work in the garden and its beautiful flora are also on view.’ Historic Railway: This historic cogwheel railway with rolling stock from the 19th century, winds its way up from Wilderswil, through forest and across the Breitlauenen Alp, to the Schynige Platte. On a clear day, views of Interlaken, Lake Brienz and Lake Thun are spectacular. Once through the Grätli Tunnel the beautiful vista of the Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau opens up, a feature of the plateau itself. Only operates in the summer season. An old-fashioned railway takes you from Wilderswil to the Schynige Platte in about one hour. Once at the summit, enjoy sensationally panoramic views of Interlaken, Lake Brienz, Lake Thun and the peaks all around. In addition to the numerous hiking trails, the Schynige Platte offers a Botanical Alpine Garden. Get off at the Breitlauenen Station and hike 1.5 hours to the Schynig Platte. From Wilderswil, a five-minute walk from the Interlaken Ost railway station, you can take a rack-railroad that has been carrying sightseers up to the Schynige Platte since it opened in 1893. The hour-long ride is a series of ever-changing Alpine panoramas, and at the top, you'll find one of the finest panoramic views of the Alps, encompassing the Eiger, Mönch, and Jungfrau peaks as well as Lake Thun. You can enjoy these from a 45-minute panoramic walk along an easy trail, which also leads to an excellent alpine garden with 600 species of flowers and high-altitude plants. If you're lucky there may be locals playing traditional Swiss Alphorns at the Schynige Platte station.
