It is one of the largest urban natural parks in Spain, a green space of more than nine passable kilometers that crosses the city with recreational and sports areas and romantic corners where you can get lost. From the Parque de Cabecera to the Ciutat de les Artes y les Ciències, the Turia Garden is an ideal route for runners, cyclists, families and nature lovers. Crowned by 18 bridges that are traces of centuries of history, the old river bed borders on both banks with some of the main museums and monuments of the city. This immense garden is built on the old bed of the Turía river, which was diverted to avoid the continuous flooding that the city suffered. After the great flood of October 14, 1957 that devastated the city, the riverbed of the Turia was diverted to the south of Valencia, leaving free an important strip of land that crosses the city from West to East, surrounding the historic center. Inaugurated in 1986, various urban planners and landscapers designed the different sections of the riverbed, reproducing the old fluvial landscape and creating a unique route populated by palm and orange trees, fountains and pines, aromatic plants and ponds, sports courts and rose bushes. The immense garden is also limited by the Cabecera Park and the Bioparc to the West, and the avant-garde City of Arts and Sciences on the opposite side, almost at the mouth.

Enjoy the Turia Gardens (the old riverbed park) on a sunny day. It is the largest urban garden in Spain, with about 9 km long and 110 hectares. After a flood in 1957, the river Turia was diverted to the south of the city and Valencians turned it into a park. Its route is dotted by many places of interest: the Cabecera Park, the Bioparc (best zoological park in Europe), the Gulliver Park (children will love it), the Palau de la Música and the stunning City of Arts and Sciences... It has become the most popular place for sports as it has many sports facilities in its route (including a 5 km running track). The best way to enjoy it is by bike. You can rent a bike (I recommend Valencia Bikes, at Passeig de la Petxina 32 (open 09:30-18:00, reservation needed calling +34 963851740, located just a 10 min. walk from home) and cycle up to the “Parque de Cabecera” and down to the City of Arts and Sciences. There are a couple of kiosks with terraces to get refreshments on the way.

Old riverbed Turia, transformed in a huge park (9 kms length), alternating old & contemporary architecture (bridges, leisure, sport & Art facilities, fountains, green areas, man-made lakes, etc).
