Take the ferry from Paihia to Russell, another really sweet little town which is perfect to grab an ice cream, go for breakfast/lunch/dinner, to do some shopping or go for a swim at the beach.

Russell is a former whaling station and New Zealand's first European settlement. It is a historic town with a quaint British feel. It has a lot of history and it is a must see. You can have lunch at the Duke of Marlborough (NZ's oldest pub), or have coffee and croissants at the Pompallier Mission. To get there take either the passenger ferry from Paihia wharf or the car ferry from Opua.

The first Parliament of New Zealand was formed in Russell. There is a lot of history over there, Catch the car ferry and make it a day trip.

You could go across on the people ferry (recommended - you don't need a car there) or the car ferry (if you want to go exploring further out. There are bars, cafes, shops. A must to. Allow 1/2 day at least to have a good look around and a relaxing time.
