Did you know that the state capitol was designed by Thomas Jefferson in 1785? It was modeled the Capitol after the Maison Carée, an ancient Roman temple in Nîmes, France. The Virginia General Assembly occupied the Capitol in 1788 and members of the Virginia executive and judicial branches moved into the building in 1789. It is a National Historic Landmark, has been nominated for inclusion on the World Heritage List, is on the Virginia Landmarks Register and on the National Register of Historic Places. Located in Richmond, the Virginia State Capitol is the seat of the state government of Virginia and home to the General Assembly, the oldest continuously operating legislature in the Western Hemisphere. Designed by Thomas Jefferson, the Capitol was constructed in the Monumental Classical style, which paved the way for the design of countless government buildings after that. It was completed in 1788 and has since been designated as a National Historic Landmark. There are several exhibitions and displays at the Capitol, as well as a 20-minute visually interactive film about the Virginia’s central role in American history called Keepers of the Flame. Visitors can enjoy guided tours through the buildings of the Capitol.

Not to be missed is a trip to the Virginia State Capitol, home to the oldest legislature in continuous operation in the western hemisphere. The Virginia General Assembly has been meeting in this building designed by Thomas Jefferson since 1788. It was the very first structure in the New World, built in the Monumental Classical style and has been the inspiration for many other capitols, courthouses, government structures, and all sorts of other buildings. It’s truly a gem in the heart of downtown Richmond.
