Entrance Almere. Distance: 28 km. The Oostvaardersplassen, a large swamp area with reed plains, rugged grasslands, ponds, surrounded by forests: a true bird paradise of international value. These are the Oostvaardersplassen, part of the New Land National Park. More than 50 years ago, nature in southern Flevoland created this vast swamp area. Geese, spoonbills and cormorants quickly found the Oostvaardersplassen, just like deer, foxes, hares, bats and butterflies. And since 2006 even the bald eagle is nesting there. In this bird-rich swamp area, people and nature work together in a special way. You will encounter heck cattle, konik horses and red deer along the way. With their grazing they keep the grasslands open in a natural way. And they in turn ask for care and management. Discover this bird-rich swamp area and experience how each season has its own dynamics and surprising developments. Go on a safari with a forest ranger, get on your bike or download ‘The New Wilderness iTour’ on your smartphone and get going.

You can take a well deserved rest when you reach the welcoming bar in the De Oostvaarders nature experience centre on the Almere side, or alternatively rest your legs in the Buitencentrum in Lelystad. Both visitors centres provide binoculars for spotting the animals in the reserve.

The Oostvaardersplassen is a nature reserve in the Netherlands, which is managed by the State Forestry Service. Covering about 56 square kilometres, it is noted as an example of rewilding. It is in a polder which was created in 1968, but in spite of the environment having little time to develop, by 1989 it had international importance as a Ramsar wetland. The nature reserve is also near Almere.

A park that was created by accident. The wildlife has such a special flora and fauna that an international rewarded movie has been made about it ("de nieuwe wildernis / the new wildernes"). A must see for nature lovers!
