Entertainment & Activities

If you are in town on a clear Friday night, visit the historic Fuertes Observatory on Cornell Campus (plenty of parking) and view the stars through the original 1920’s telescope. Climb the ladder, peer through the lens and learn about Jupiter, Saturn and the Milky Way, guided by students from the Cornell Astronomical Society. Romantic and unique. Also a great thing to do with kids, and best of all, it's free!

Parks & Nature

One of the most beautiful trails in Ithaca starts downtown only a few short blocks from the apartment. Take your time, wind your way up the steps of the gorge while listening to the sounds of rushing waters until you reach the Schwartz Center for Performing Arts at Cornell. If you are hungry or thirsty after the (short, but sometimes steep) climb, Collegetown Bagels is located across the street and you can sit outside. The gorge trail is open from April through early November.

A.D. White Library (under the clock tower) Also known as the Harry Potter Library, this is a special place to remember the past. A.D. White’s collections of materials on architecture, witchcraft, the Reformation, the French Revolution, Abolitionism and the Civil War were among the finest in the world during his lifetime. Bring a book, sit quietly and enjoy the scene.

Ithaca has its own literary festival each spring, and a history as a wellspring for writers. Some of the more famous who have been inspired, written or taught here include: Vladmir Nabokov, Kurt Vonnegut, Thomas Pynchon, Pearl S. Buck, E.B. White, Brian Hall, Alison Lurie, Leslie Daniels, Rod Serling, Toni Morrison... and many more. Buffalo Street Books is Ithaca’s very own cooperative bookstore, with an eclectic collection of titles. Each week there are usually two or three authors reading from their latest works or available to answer questions. It's a wonderful place to spend an hour or two rummaging through fascinating topics, themes and individualized staff picks. Highly recommended!

Essentials

A small health-food grocery in the DeWitt Mall for basic (organic) food and supplies. Fruit, vegetables and pretty much anything else necessary for a good healthy (or not so healthy) meal is available. It's easy to get to, easy to shop, and easy to find something you've never tried before.
