The Palace of Malia is situated on the North coast of Crete, East of Heraklion. To the south lie the Lasithi mountains. At 7,500 square metres, it is the third largest of the Minoan palaces. The Minoan name for the Palace is not known and it takes its name from a local town. It is now thought that the first monumental architecture to be erected on the Malia site dates back to EM IIB. An EM IIB building, or possibly a group of buildings, built around a large open space has been discovered below the present Palace, and aligned in the same way. Below this EM IIB building are the remains of EM IIA architecture built in a more simple style and based on a different orientation.

The entrance of Diktaion Antron The cave of Psychro is one of the most important cult places of Minoan Crete. The use of caves as cult places was one of the basic characteristics of the religious beliefs of the ancient Cretans. Cult practice probably begins in the Early Minoan period (2800-2300 B.C.) - although in the antechamber are preserved traces of an even earlier occupation - but the most important finds date from the Middle Minoan period (1800 B.C.) and later, as it was used for many centuries, until the Geometric (8th century B.C.) and the Orientalising-Archaic period (7th-6th cent

The lake of Agios Nikolaos in the centre of town is the most famous landmark of Agios Nikolaos for visitors and locals alike. The lake of Agios Nikolaos is also known as Voulismeni (“sunken”), and by the unattractive name of Vromolimni (“Stinkylake”), acquired in times past, when the stagnant waters of the lake gave off an unpleasant smell until a channel was cut to the sea in 1867. That was also when the small bridge was built by Pasha Kostis Adosides. The lake of Agios Nikolaos has distinctive vertical walls reminiscent of a volcanic crater, which is why some people believe that it was created by a sunken volcano. Though seemingly plausible, this theory has gradually lost ground and today

The small winding road with olive trees on both sides is a pleasant surprise to those who want to see a bit more of real Crete than the big tourist resorts.Driving down the road the visitor arrives to the iddylic little harbor of Sissi. The traveller gets really surprised by this natural harbor where the sea goes far into the land and forms a fascinating bay οn the left side of which there is a small palm tree grove. Around the harbor are many shops, restaurants, bars, fish tavernas but the place loses none of its natural beauty. Being there around sunset is quaranteed to be one of the loveliest memories of your summer travel.
