Fisherton Mill, a vibrant gallery and design shop. Its cafe is probably the best place in the city to eat (linguine with sea bass and king prawns £16), and the studios upstairs are home to individual outlets showcasing everything from knitting and sustainable fashion to garden design and jewellery. It’s on Fisherton Street, where you’ll also find intriguing independent shops — vintage clothes, interiors, antiques — and, in Baroushka (Middle Eastern) and Anokaa (Indian), two restaurants that are several well-seasoned cuts above the norm.

Avon Road, Devizes SN10 1PR The Kennet & Avon Canal has awesome examples of canal engineering. At Caen Hill, you can see one of the longest continuous flight of locks in the country - a total of 29 locks with a rise of 237 feet over 2 miles! An impressive bit of engineering. Interesting to watch the boats climb the hill. Pay for parking at the Caen Hill Cafe, The Locks, Devizes SN10 1QR who record your registration. Cafe only accept cash.

Parks & Nature

Drive along Langford Rd & not far upstream is a Wild Swimming Pool area in the Wylye River (near Hanging Langford) -there's a seat if you want to sit and watch the water (maybe better in winter to go with a flask). Locals ignore the 'No Swimming' notice, but my advice is to not go in if the Swan is there protecting his brood. This is just by a Nature Reserve which is splendid especially in winter Free walks round lake. Picnics.

The extensive Grovely Woods (just Google for a flavour this fine stretch of woodland that was once a royal hunting forest) Go under the railway bridge & turn right up the hill past the cemetery if you are good walkers. If not, or if you have a pushchair, simply continue along the lane till you reach the Woods, then dive in, probably to the right

The road through Cheddar Gorge has been crowned in 2018 as Britain's most scenic route. Experts named the B3135 from Cheddar to Ashwick, which winds its way through the rolling Mendip Hills, as the country's most pleasant drive. At weekends in winter visits to the caves are recommended but these are for the adventurous. It is about 12 miles north west of Wells where there is a most beautiful Cathedral. And Bruton is a further 12 miles towards our cottage -see separate entries. These would make for a splendid day out.
