Food Scene

great coffee, home baked breads, good breakfast (a bit pricey but high quality) and famous hot cinnamon rolls fresh out of the oven. Especially cool on a wednesday or saturday morning when there is the Friedenau farmer's market going on right outside.

They just opened and still a secret to most. Three Neukölln guys who set out to bring great coffee, freshly pressed smoothies and homemade cakes to our neighbourhood. Great for working as well with their cozy tables and wifi. We use it as our "home office" most of the time. Try the vegan chocolate cake with cherries, it's the best!

Fast and cheap sushi, very popular with the locals. T4 (fried avocado and salmon sushi) and 1d (fish soup) are our favourites. It's not the prettiest sushi you'll ever see, but it's awesome for a snack while shopping or to take home

1920s style Berlin Kaffeehaus, hidden in the first floor of a small entrance in busy Schlossstr. The service is more often than not in a weird mood, but don't let that spoil the atmosphere! (Also, it's pretty authentic Berlin service..) Apart from the wide selection of traditional cakes, they serve breakfast and lunch, which are rather pricey but the coffee is good and the Buchteln mit Vanillesauce are great.

REALLY great pizza, very affordable, always crowded, reservation recommended. The boss will give you a taste of Berliner Schnauze, but it's all fun. Consider going to Zig Zag Jazz Club afterwards, it's right across the street.

This is a play café perfect for babies and toddlers. There's a whole room for the kids to play while mommy get's her coffeine break. Great homemade cakes, snacks for the kids, changing table, nursing corner and lots of little chocolate fingers to ruin your outfit ;)

The grown-up alternative to Café Cocosh. Small place, a bit more hipster than what this street is used too, young crowd, great ice-cream and barista coffee.

Super chill and relaxed place that gives off a student vibe and is just perfect to get a coffee, have some cake and play a boardgames on a rainy afternoon. They don't have wifi, instead there's lots of "real" culture, like poetry slams, author's readings and a book exchange corner. In summer the patio is always crowded.

The back room is like grandma's living room, lined with bookshelves, comfy couches and a piano. The breakfasts are great, okay priced, will fill you up and they're fun because they are named for fairytales. Saturdays they have a brunch in the "belle etage" upstairs, but I like downstairs better. I recommend the "Eiweisshock" (Vanillequark with fruit and cinnamon) and making a reservation!

4 Dance-Floors: Pop, Salsa, Bachata, Reggaeton (even though the Dj seems to struggle with keeping them apart...). Ladies get in for free most nights up to a certain time and there's an hour of dance classes some nights. If you like Salsa, this is the place to go!

If you like Jazz, be sure to check it out! Open most nights of the week, the Zig Zag is a mix between living room and night club. Reservation highly recommended, the place fills out quickly. Snacks and drinks a bit pricey, maybe have pizza at Trattoria del Corso (right across the street) before coming here.

Sightseeing

Gendarmenmarkt is one of the few really beautiful plazas that have survived in east Germany during the times of the wall. one of my favourite spots to be in warm summer evenings, relaxing and watching tourists. You can sit on one of the benches and listen to the trumpet guy who plays there almost every evening, watching the sun go down over Berlin and enjoy the beautiful scenery. I like that the spot is a bit hidden, so it is not crowded like the Brandenburger Tor, but it is very close to some of my favourite sites in Berlin, like the Bücherdenkmal and the German National Museum. Secret tip: There is a great German history museum in the German dome, it's free of charge and rarely crowded.

Named as one of "Europe's 12 favourite streets" by New York Times, this area houses classic jewels of Mitteleuropa, that were left largely untouched by the Allied bombing at the end of World War II. The space is surrounded by cute little shops, restaurants, cafés and one of our favourite playgrounds. From may til september the whole area becomes crowded when the annual Rheingau wine festival, or Weinbrunnen, moves in. Wine producers from across southern Germany and Austria sell their rieslings and spätburgunders from a wooden hut in the square from the afternoon until late evening. On some weekends there is live music and an outdoor market.

Parks & Nature

Great for kids! This old knight's manor is now a working farm with a little farmer's market on the weekends and lots of cool events (like harvest feasts, nostalgic market or medieval tournaments) every other weekend. Their christmas market is famous. They now house the super cool "culinarium", a museum of German food.

The closed airport is now Berlin's biggest free space and is thus used as a giant picknick spot come summer time. You can also skate and kite here and just soak up the Berlin vibe.

Shopping

Berlin's second biggest shopping street will offer you anything you need. You'll find Rewe, Aldi and Lidl for essentials, DM and Rossmann as Drugstores, there's pharmacies, dry cleaning, manicures, all kind of doctors and about five different gyms, including fitness first, Holmes place and superfit. Most of the well known chains such as H&M, Uniqlo, Zara, you name it... Also the street is lined with cafés and fast food.

The "alternative" mall features vegan snacks and ice-cream, expensive independent labels and a glas window into the ape enclosure of the zoo. We have a yearly ticket for the zoo, so we often come here afterwards for vegan chocolate ice-cream, which is really good and some instant pictures from the photo box.

Entertainment & Activities

Weirdly its not that easy to find movie theatres in Berlin that play movies in english. This is one of the few. We like sitting in the Starbucks next door while waiting for the movies, because with it's glas front it is the absolute greatest spot for tourist watching! ;)

The closest place to our home that plays movies in english. It's much more artsy and independent than Cinestar (so obviously has a way smaller programme)

Getting Around

taking the metro is usually the easiest option to get around the city. the U9 takes you to Berlin zoologischer Garten in 10 minutes, which is usually the hub for most ongoing connections.
