Santana is a "Concelho", a municipality of Madeira composed by the city of Santana and several parishes. It's located on the north side of the island and as such it has lots of mountains and forests. There are several footpaths "veredas" within the municipality has you can check on the Santana Biosfere webpage, http://santanamadeirabiosfera.com/en/municipality-of-santana/hiking You can also find all sort of useful information there.

The Natural Park of Ribeiro Frio is one of the most visited parks of Madeira Island for it's beauty and important biodiversity. Many visitors enjoy the beautiful evergreen mountains, the hikes and the breathtaking atmosphere that make this place so unique.
Above Funchal city and close to the cottages, you will find the Natural Park of Funchal, with its mountains, flora and fauna. After huge fires in the past this park is now recovering thanks to several reforestation programs and regaining it's former beauty.

Above Funchal city and close to the cottages, you will find the Natural Park of Funchal, with its mountains, flora and fauna. After huge fires in the past this park is now recovering thanks to several reforestation programs and regaining it's former beauty.
One of the most beautiful trails of the Island, this 10 Km round-trip that starts at the water treatment station of Quebradas at São Jorge, will lead you through some agricultural landscapes of São Jorge and Santana, before entering in a indigenous forest area, where you can observe several species of trees, plants and trees of Madeira's Laurissilva forest.

One of the most beautiful trails of the Island, this 10 Km round-trip that starts at the water treatment station of Quebradas at São Jorge, will lead you through some agricultural landscapes of São Jorge and Santana, before entering in a indigenous forest area, where you can observe several species of trees, plants and trees of Madeira's Laurissilva forest.
A 6Km round-up trail that starts at Achada do Teixeira and ends on the highest peak of Madeira Island, this easy terrain but phisically demanding path will make the day for many hikers. Filled with amazing landscapes of mountains and valleys, it is simply one that you can't miss while staying at the cottages!

A 6Km round-up trail that starts at Achada do Teixeira and ends on the highest peak of Madeira Island, this easy terrain but phisically demanding path will make the day for many hikers. Filled with amazing landscapes of mountains and valleys, it is simply one that you can't miss while staying at the cottages!
Not far from the Cottages, near the trout nursery of Ribeiro Frio, you will find the starting point of this beautiful 11Km point to point hike that ends at Portela. You will have to get a transport there or do another 11Km for a round-up hike, either way is worthy to do it for it's natural landscapes of great beauty. You should take a flash-light on this one since there are tunnels, and also a lunch due to it's lenght.

"um caminho para todos" translating it means A path for everyone, starting at Pico das Pedras with Queimadas as destination, this 4Km point to point hike is quite easy to do even with bad weather, it was modified to allow everyone to enjoy Madeira's beautiful nature, including small children and elderly citizens.

One of the best and most popular restaurants in the area, Abrigo do Pastor has a warm ambience and good food to go with it.
It's close by the cottages, and they serve all sort of dishes. Although they don't have any vegetarian dishes on the menu they adapt some of their dishes by request.
