In 1932 the first Morelli's ice cream parlour which proudly presides over the beautiful and much-loved Viking Bay in Broadstairs, Kent, was opened, becoming the first ever to serve over 20 flavours of ice cream. This parlour still proudly serves loyal customers today and retains a magical feel of stepping back in time with its soda fountain, juke box, formica tops and pink leatherette booths, it is overwhelmingly nostalgic.

Be sure to head to tiny, family-run bakery, The Old Bakehouse, in Broadstairs, for a loaf of freshly made sourdough or a homemade cake. It’s such a cute and quirky building that you’ll want to pull up a chair and sit outside, tucking into one of their huge scones and a pot of tea. It is situated at the end on Raglan place literally a few steps from the cottage.
There is a cafe inside but it’s rather small and a bit of a squeeze. At the weekends, it’s flooded by tourists who flock to it for it’s typically English charm. theoldbakehousebroadstairs.com

Standing-room only indoors, but a few chairs and tables outside. Really recommended.

Sightseeing
A surfer's paradise, Joss Bay this popular 200-metre long bay is known as the best surfing beach in Thanet. It is surrounded by fields and a golf course so offers a wide expanse of sand and carefree play.
The surf school on the beach hires boards and wet suits so you can take to the waves, a little different to the bays smuggling days! If you're not into your water sports the beach is still perfect for a day at the beach with deck chair and lounger hire available, a beach shop and cafe on the sands.
There is plenty of exposed sand when the tide is in, but take care walking, as the beach will get cut off at both ends.

Joss Gap RoadA surfer's paradise, Joss Bay this popular 200-metre long bay is known as the best surfing beach in Thanet. It is surrounded by fields and a golf course so offers a wide expanse of sand and carefree play.

Discovered in 1835, Margate's Shell Grotto is an astonishing find; 21 metres of winding passages decorated with 4.6 million shells. The walls are covered in images of gods and goddesses, trees of life and patterns of whelks, mussels and oysters. Some think it is an ancient Pagan grotto, others that it is simply an ornate Regency folly; but with no definitive explanation or history, the Shell Grotto is Kent's greatest mystery.

In the bar there is a welcoming fire roaring for you to warm up on. During Broadstairs Folk week the Tartar Frigate is a focal point of the festivities with live bands during the day and evening and during the summer you can even take your beer on the beach.

Ronnie Barker is said to have been inspired to write the famous Four Candles sketch whilst on a visit to Broadstairs to see his comedy partner, Ronnie Corbett. Corbett had a holiday home next to the Charles Dickens public house and just along from H. E. Harrington's general ironmonger business that is famed for stocking everything you could possibly need.
