Food Scene
There are lots of nice cafes, and restaurants on Beaumont Street but this one is something a little different. Limoo serves delicious Persian food, which isn't common in Newcastle, and the staff are very friendly. The chicken biryani is awesome, as is the stuffed capsicum. The sweets are even better than the mains.

Go to Merewether Beach for a swim or a walk along the esplanade. It's a great walk from here to Bar Beach and up the Hill to . . . The Hill and King Edward Park. Or, go South to a secret beach! The ocean baths here are also a beautiful spot for a swim and the largest in the Southern Hemisphere.

Sightseeing
It's a really nice walk along the beach and up the hill along the Anzac memorial bridge that overlooks the cliff. There's a great view of the city and coast from up here and from June to November you're a good chance of spotting some migrating humpback whales.

This is the site of an old fort originally built in the early 1800s and is the only fort in Australia to have fired its guns at the Japanese during WWII. It's a nice historical spot that kids will love but there is also a great view of the harbour and city from the lawns.

This a big park with a playground for kids, and tennis court, but it's mostly lawns where balls can be kicked and picnics had. There are also free gas bbqs here that you can use.

This is another nice park a bit further away. There is a large creek that runs through here, an off-leash dog area, playground and also a few fish if you want to wet a line. It's a nice stroll along the creek if not too hot.

This is our closest beach as the crow flies. It's a 25 to 35 minute walk straight down Parkway Ave from near our place. The buses go past also, if that's too far to walk. There is a rock pool area that's sheltered from the swell for swimming, a cafe and take-away food shop and you can walk around the headland to 'secret' Susan Guilmore beach and along the rock shelf at low tide.
