The David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust is a world-famous, beautiful conservancy for elephants and rhino. I won't say much but be prepared to fall in love with the adorable calves and don't be surprised if you end up adopting one. As visiting time is only one hour daily and by prior booking, contact them early and leave in good time to beat traffic and the crowds.

Never fed a giraffe? Wait no longer. At the Giraffe Centre you'll walk up the flight of stairs and see eye to eye with these graceful ladies and gents. The kids will love this one and it makes for a very memorable experience.

As I'm sure you've heard before, Nairobi is the only city in the world where you can see wildlife in their natural habitat. The Nairobi National Park is one of many game reserves in Kenya and is a short drive out of Nairobi’s central business district. Wide open grass plains are set against the backdrop of city scrapers and you can see endangered black rhino, lions, leopards, cheetahs, hyenas, buffaloes, giraffes and diverse birdlife. For logistics and tours see: http://www.kws.go.ke/parks/nairobi-national-park

The Animal Orphanage is where orphaned, injured or abandoned animals are cared for with the hopes of being released back into the wild. It is connected to the Nairobi National Park and it's possible to do the two together. Depending on timings, you may have the fun of seeing a rhino being fed his evening snack and tucked into bed by his keeper - yes, as cute as it sounds.

Shopping

Yaya Centre is everything you expect in a shopping mall. Don't miss Mama Africa restaurant at the food loft! A big ol' chow-down after a hard day and within walking distance of home. "Y" go anywhere else?

At Maasai Market you'll find all your artistic, authentic, Kenyan curios and souvenirs in one colourful, place! Have fun negotiating prices but do keep in mind that that beautiful piece took talent and time that deserves a fair price. Note: the location changes by day of the week. G00gle will help or ask me for the link to the schedule and I'll forward it you. http://www.africanspicesafaris.com/masai_market_shopping_nairobi_kenya.html

Arts & Culture

If you saw the film "Out of Africa," you cannot, cannot, cannot miss Karen Blixen's very own home, now preserved as a museum of the same name. Even if you didn't see the movie, this is worth a visit at least for the charm, historical legacy and beautiful grounds. Might make you want to see the film before or after. Don't miss the coffee shop with the English cream and feather-light muffins. High tea anyone?

As you take a walking tour of the central business district, the Kenya National Archives are minutes on foot from KICC. Alternatively, a short bus ride from the Bungalow on route no. 46 buses and matatus will take you right to the Archives/Ambassador terminus. If you are a history and traditional culture buff, this one cannot be missed. There is a very unique collection on tribal artefacts from Kenya to West Africa, and then touching on contemporary historical figures including the illustrious Prof. Wangari Maathai. It is inspiring to see our shared history and though some parts of the exhibit can be better displayed, it is definitely worth a visit if you are in the city centre.

"Boma" is the Kiswahili word for 'homestead' so at the Bomas of Kenya you will find traditional homesteads from the various tribal/ethnic groupings of Kenya, along with details on their way of life, customs and culture. See a traditional dance, meander through the villages, and admire the costume and regalia worn by the resident artistes.

Food Scene

The Java Houe Restaurant, Café and Coffee Shop is all that, rolled into one; a set-up, so unique to the warm hospitality of Kenya. Have a quick bite and awesome coffee or chow down on a full, hearty breakfast, lunch or dinner, while enjoying the cosy ambience and free wi-fi. Java is a chain of restaurants so you can have consistency no matter the location. There are 4 within walking distance of the Bungalow: Yaya Centre, Prestige Plaza, Hurlingham, Nairobi Hospital.

Alexandre Bakery offers a variety of dainty cakes and pastries, coffees and sandwiches. Environment is a bit hustled though smokers will enjoy the upstairs, outdoor seating.

Dejina is right at your doorstep, offering very filling Ethiopian food and authentic Ethiopian coffee. Definitely try the mixed platter but only if there are at least two of you or if you haven't eaten for 3 days - it's that huge! As a bonus, serves a full hot breakfast from9.00am, stays open fairly late too. Fun rustic feel and lovely staff (if Tsegai is there, say hi and let him know Betty from next door sent you).

Carnivore or "Carn-ee" as it's known to locals is not your conventional all-you-can-eat joint! Here you have delicious game meats served sizzling hot and by the time you've eaten your fill, you'll be begging the waiter not give you more! The ambience in a tropical garden, service and decor are outstanding. For the party-lovers, Carnivore is one hip nightclub that is a very popular. New Year's cannot be missed!

The EatOut website has tonnes of restaurants that can be matched to your location+reviews from people who've tried the place. https://eatout.co.ke/nearby Unless the place is quite well-known and sure to be open, do G00gle the phone number and give them a quick call, just to be sure they still exist.

At the hotel entrance, unobtrusively to one side, there is a little-known secret coffee shop with no name and that not a soul in Nairobi knows about...mouhahahaha! It's literally metres from the Bungalow, quiet and hidden away, with devilishly delicious baked goods, coffee, tea etc. On a chilly day or as an alternative to caffeine, try the "dawa" - lemon, ginger, honey, cinnamon. Open early, closes at 10.00pm. Fantastic for a change of scene, meeting point, landmark, drop-off/collection point, clue in a treasure hunt...:)

Delicious, nutritious, healthy Mediterranean food, a 15 minute walk from the unit. The restaurant is especially vegetarian friendly, given the Lebanese menu and if you order from the mezze, it may be pricey, but you will have a doggy bag for days! Great for those who sometimes crave a shawarma or a falafel.

Although it isn't your shiny, halogen-lit supermarket, I love Uchumi for it's down-to-earth, budget friendliness. Basic toiletries, groceries and their fresh fruit and milk ATM are by far the best for quality and value. Oddly enough, the clothing section can unearth a cool bargain! (There! I said it! I buy my clothes at a supermarket!) Great little bakery and snack bar too, and right next to several fast-food joints.

Getting Around

Qwality Hotel is just 400 m from the bungalow. Route 46 buses and minivans (matatu) take you to and from the CBD in 20 minutes (without traffic). When coming home, ask the bus conductor to drop you off at "Kwality" and s/he is sure to know just where you mean.
