Weather
Highs are usually in the 80s or 90s
and the skies are clear. Summer and
fall months do bring rain but often the
showers are brief. San Jose (most
common arrival and departure city)
can be 5 to 10 degrees cooler.
What to bring
Shorts, teeshirts and sandals are all
the clothes you typically need. If you
plan to hike in the rainforest or to the
beach you might want to have good
walking shoes, a pair of long pants
and a long sleeve shirt. Don’t forget
your swimsuit(s)! Dinner attire even at the best restaurants is casual.
Bring your camera, binoculars, sunblock, sunglasses and a hat. We provide towels,
soap, hair dryers, shampoo and conditioner. You may want to have insect repellent for
rainforest hikes and tours. If you do forget something don’t worry there are stores
nearby.
Money
In general you do not need to obtain Costa Rican colones. Dollars are pretty much
accepted everywhere although you might not get the best exchange when using cash.
There are numerous ATMs (bilingual) in the area and many will distribute either colones
or dollars. Credit cards are accepted for most things but some of the activities accept
only cash. If you do plan to use your credit card, remember to notify your bank before
hand or risk the transaction being rejected. Do not bring travelers checks as they are
not generally accepted.
If you do decide to get some colones, we suggest you use a local ATM. The exchange
rates is usually the best available and most US banks no longer charge a currency
exchange service fee. But do not expect your bank to refund any ATM transaction fees.
Visa and MasterCard are accepted most everywhere…American Express is not as
widely accepted. If you pay in cash with dollars you will usually get change in colones.
Historically, the exchange rate is between 500 and 550 colones to a dollar. If you
assume 500 then the math is real simple. Take the amount in colones, divide by 1000
and multiply by 2. So 21,000 colones is about $42.00.

The tap water and food are safe to
drink and eat, although we recommend
you stick to established restaurants
and grocery stores. If you get out in
the country you may want to avoid
street vendors and consume only
bottled drinks.
Restaurants add a 13% sales tax to
the bill. They also automatically add a
10% service charge. Additional tipping
(propina) above that is at your
discretion. If paying by credit card you
can usually add a tip on the receipt
when you sign…but not always. You
can always leave a few colones or
dollars on the table. Most waiters and waitresses speak pretty good English. Menus are
usually in both languages.
Generally, restaurants and shops will charge your credit card in colones but sometimes
it will be in dollars. Some receipts will show the total in both currencies.
Quepos
You will drive through Quepos, which is our closest town, on the way to your villa. It is a
quaint 6 square blocks, and offers many shops and grocery stores catering to the locals
and expats. Highlights include the Marina Pez Vella and the Friday eve/Saturday
morning farmers’ market.
The road from Quepos to Manuel Antonio Beach/Park is approximately 7 kilometers
long. It is sprinkled with dozens of restaurants, bars, a couple casinos and gift shops
offering something for everyone not to mention breathtaking views at every turn. Most of
our vacation villas are located near this road and about halfway between Quepos and
Manuel Antonio beach.
Costa Ricans (locally referred to as Ticos) are warm, affectionate and hospitable
people. Their pace is slower than ours, and it serves us well to embrace the differences
and adopt the Pura Vida (pure life) lifestyle. Many speak some English but playing
charades in some of the markets and local establishments is all a part of the adventure!

Staying in Touch
Please feel free to leave your
concierge’s (Alexander’s) cell
number with family/friends at
home for emergency purposes.
Dial: 011-506-8876-0136. Also
toll free from North America to
our office in Costa Rica:
800-521-4947.
Most all of our villas have
broadband and WiFi, so you can
also easily check your email or
use Skype.
Cell phone service is very good in the Manuel Antonio area. You can either get an
international plan from your normal provider or, if you have an unlocked GSM phone
you can purchase a local SIM card for as little as $2.00. There are several providers but
we advise using Kolbi. It is run by the national electric company (ICE) and has the best
overall coverage. They have a small booth where you can purchase the card in the
luggage claim area at the San Jose airport. The $2.00 gives you a CR phone number,
along with around 50 minutes and data. It can also be purchased at many local stores
and can be recharged at same or online.
Local Transportation
Buses and taxis are readily available in the Manuel Antonio area, however, the Spanish/
English language barrier is not for everyone. Most of our guests choose to rent a
vehicle. This also allows for more freedom of movement and the ability to travel fluidly
with no delays. You do not need an international drivers license, your US, Canadian or
European license and your passport is all that is required. All the major US rental
agencies have offices in Costa Rica both near the San Jose airport and in the Manuel
Antonio area.
If you need a taxi or any other transportation please contact your concierge.
Emergency
In case of emergency contact your concierge or call 911. We have English speaking
doctors and ambulance services in the event of injury or illness.
Tours
We are very familiar with all the various tours and other activities available in the area.
We can advise you on which one may interest you most and also make sure you get the
best price. We use top notch operators with great track records, proper licensing and
insurance for our guests’ peace of mind. Later in the document you will find a
comprehensive list of our offerings.

Check-In/Out
Our check in time is 3:00 PM. Check
out time is 11:00 AM.
Maid Service
The rental of your villa includes maid
service 6 days per week (Monday -
Saturday). If you do need maid or
maintenance service when our staff is
not present please contact your
concierge.
Getting to Manuel Antonio
US and Canadian citizens can enter
and stay in Costa Rica for up to 90
days without a visa. You will simply
need a valid passport that does not
expire within 6 months of your entry
date. Other nationalities should check
with the Costa Rican consulate in your country.
Most all of the major US airlines service the San Jose’s Juan Santamaría International
airport (SJO). From there you can fly one of the local airlines (Nature Air or Sansa) to
the Quepos airport (XQP) or drive to the Manuel Antonio area (approximate 2.5 hours).
If you opt to drive you can either rent a car or we can arrange a private transfer for you.
Rates for transfers can be found later in this document.
Miscellaneous
Costa Rica uses the same 110 volt electrical service and plugs as the US. So you do
not need any transformers or adaptors for your electronics.
Costa Rica does not observe daylight savings time. So during the summer it is EDT -2
hours and during the winter EST -1 hour. Year round sunrise is between 5:30 and 6:00
AM while sunset is between 5:30 and 6:00 PM.
We encourage you to tip your concierge and house staff based on the quality of service
they provide for you.

Activities & Tours
One of the prime reasons people flock
to the Manuel Antonio area is the vast
number and variety of things to do.
There is something for everyone from
the athletic surfer to an easy going
sunset cruiser. Your experienced
concierge is here to not only make
recommendations based on your
preferences but to also obtain the best
price. We have listed some of the
more popular offerings below, but if
you do not see something you might
be interested in doing just ask. We
once accommodated a client that
wanted to take a helicopter tour of the
area.
Transportation to the venue and
english speaking guides are generally
included. Some also include a meal.
Don't forget to bring a camera, hat, sunblock, bug repellent and to wear appropriate
clothing including shoes.
• ATV Tours - Experience the most unforgettable tour in the Quepos/Manuel
Antonio area, located just minutes north of the Manuel Antonio National Park
biological corridor. After safety and security instructions, drive your own fullyequipped ATV into the rugged mountains, where your professional bilingual
guides lead you through rustic tropical settings. Head to San Antonio de Damas
to see waterfalls and natural springs located in the unique rainforest ecosystem.
During the tour you pass by four different types of plantations: teak, rice, papaya
and African palm. Your guide will point out interesting facts concerning the
environment. You also pass through several traditional towns; giving you the
chance to see a different more rustic side of Costa Rica. About halfway through
your journey, leave your ATVs on the trail for a short nature hike through the
primary rainforest. With a little bit of luck, you will see: Titi Monkeys, Toucans,
Sloths and various types of tropical birds. Then reward yourself with a refreshing
swim in the crystalline pond of a spectacular waterfall. End your exotic journey
with a delicious Tico-style meal at a microbrewery where you can also sample
some of their craft beers. Overall, this is a Costa Rican adventure not to be
missed!
• Baru National Rainforest and Wildlife Reserve - The Baru National Rainforest
and Wildlife Reserve tour is a 3 to 4 hour guided walk. It is a wonderful way to
observe the unique tropical environment Costa Rica has to offer. You will be
Vacation Villas, Manuel Antonio, Costa Rica www.villascr.com
accompanied by an experienced, local
guide who grew up in this rainforest. He is
quite familiar with the flora and fauna of
the area and will share his knowledge as
he leads you along the trails into remote
parts of the reserve. You will pass through
a wide variety of habitats including
primary and secondary rainforest,
wetlands, pastures, teak and cocoa
plantations. You may encounter all four of
the main primate groups: Capuchin
Monkeys (White Faced), Howler
Monkeys, Squirrel Monkeys (Titis) and
Spider Monkeys. The latter do not occur
in and around Manuel Antonio National
Park. Other wildlife sightings may include,
three toed sloths, two toed sloths,
agoutis, peccaries, iguanas and toucans.
• Bird Walks - Manuel Antonio National
Park is comprised of primary rainforest
traversed by several trails where birding
and bird photography can be rewarding.
The park is home to a variety of specialty
birds restricted to southwestern and
southern Costa Rica. Because it abuts
the ocean, a number of marine birds can also be seen along the shoreline. There
are also numerous other locations in and the around the area that are seldom
visited by tourists and great for birding. Walks are geared for all level of birders
from beginners to avid enthusiasts.
• Catamaran Tours - Imagine cruising along the lush coastline of Costa Rica on a
beautiful sailboat while sipping a fresh Piña Colada or a glass of your favorite
