Weather Highs are usually in the 80s or 90s and the skies are clear. Summer and fall months do bring rain but often the showers are brief. San Jose (most common arrival and departure city) can be 5 to 10 degrees cooler. What to bring Shorts, teeshirts and sandals are all the clothes you typically need. If you plan to hike in the rainforest or to the beach you might want to have good walking shoes, a pair of long pants and a long sleeve shirt. Don’t forget your swimsuit(s)! Dinner attire even at the best restaurants is casual. Bring your camera, binoculars, sunblock, sunglasses and a hat. We provide towels, soap, hair dryers, shampoo and conditioner. You may want to have insect repellent for rainforest hikes and tours. If you do forget something don’t worry there are stores nearby. Money In general you do not need to obtain Costa Rican colones. Dollars are pretty much accepted everywhere although you might not get the best exchange when using cash. There are numerous ATMs (bilingual) in the area and many will distribute either colones or dollars. Credit cards are accepted for most things but some of the activities accept only cash. If you do plan to use your credit card, remember to notify your bank before hand or risk the transaction being rejected. Do not bring travelers checks as they are not generally accepted. If you do decide to get some colones, we suggest you use a local ATM. The exchange rates is usually the best available and most US banks no longer charge a currency exchange service fee. But do not expect your bank to refund any ATM transaction fees. Visa and MasterCard are accepted most everywhere…American Express is not as widely accepted. If you pay in cash with dollars you will usually get change in colones. Historically, the exchange rate is between 500 and 550 colones to a dollar. If you assume 500 then the math is real simple. Take the amount in colones, divide by 1000 and multiply by 2. So 21,000 colones is about $42.00.

The tap water and food are safe to drink and eat, although we recommend you stick to established restaurants and grocery stores. If you get out in the country you may want to avoid street vendors and consume only bottled drinks. Restaurants add a 13% sales tax to the bill. They also automatically add a 10% service charge. Additional tipping (propina) above that is at your discretion. If paying by credit card you can usually add a tip on the receipt when you sign…but not always. You can always leave a few colones or dollars on the table. Most waiters and waitresses speak pretty good English. Menus are usually in both languages. Generally, restaurants and shops will charge your credit card in colones but sometimes it will be in dollars. Some receipts will show the total in both currencies. Quepos You will drive through Quepos, which is our closest town, on the way to your villa. It is a quaint 6 square blocks, and offers many shops and grocery stores catering to the locals and expats. Highlights include the Marina Pez Vella and the Friday eve/Saturday morning farmers’ market. The road from Quepos to Manuel Antonio Beach/Park is approximately 7 kilometers long. It is sprinkled with dozens of restaurants, bars, a couple casinos and gift shops offering something for everyone not to mention breathtaking views at every turn. Most of our vacation villas are located near this road and about halfway between Quepos and Manuel Antonio beach. Costa Ricans (locally referred to as Ticos) are warm, affectionate and hospitable people. Their pace is slower than ours, and it serves us well to embrace the differences and adopt the Pura Vida (pure life) lifestyle. Many speak some English but playing charades in some of the markets and local establishments is all a part of the adventure!

If you have taken Route 34 (Costanera Sur) south bound then exit to the right about 3 kilometers from Quepos onto Route 235. Follow 235 over the bridge and into the town. In 4 blocks turn left on Av. 2 where you will see a large sign “Manuel Antonio 7 KM”. Stay on this road for several blocks and take the right fork as it becomes 618, again just following the signs to Manuel Antonio. Continue on this hilly winding road for about 3 KM. Once you see the “Plaza Vista” shopping area on your right you are within a hundred yards. Our office, which we share with our sister company Latitude 9 Real Estate, is on the left just past the top of the hill (picture below). There is a parking area in front of the building. Our office is in the back of the building down the ramp. We will meet you here and escort you to your villa and get you settled. Please call 8876-0136 (CR phone) or 011-506-8876-0136 (US phone) when you start your drive and again when you reach Jaco so we can be sure to meet you upon arrival at our office. It usually takes two and a half hours to drive from the San Jose airport but traffic and other stops may delay your arrival.
