One of the first places we had dinner after we moved to LA, this is an absolutely delicious, intimate 'new american' restaurant. Perfect for a low-key but still fancy date night.

Folliero's is by far the best pizza we've had in Los Angeles, and coming from people with Chicago and New York roots, that means something. It's an old school, no-frills restaurant with a casual vibe. They make simple, inexpensive, New York-ish-style pies and they do it pretty perfectly - the crust is especially tasty, fluffy, and just the right amount of chewy. After writing this, we're hungry for Folliero's. Be warned, there is almost always a LONG wait and the line starts pretty early in the evening. Especially if you're heading to a movie or anywhere else afterwards, give yourself a good hour to wait in line.

Sunset Beer is an awesome bar and tap-room. If you've never been to a tap-room before, they have rows and rows of individual cans and bottles. Once you make your selection, you can either take it home, or bring it over to the bar area and pay a corkage fee to drink it right there. It means drinks are a lot cheaper than they would be at other bars.
Plus, their happy hour special is no corkage fee! So during the week, average cost of a drink is about $3 for a nice beer. Hard to beat!
FYI, they close early (latest is midnight), so this is better for the start of your night or for a post-dinner night cap.

A really cool slice of old LA history, this trail used to be the route of one of the Red Car trolley's that powered LA before the automobile took over. Starts right near our house and winds along the hill, giving you great views.

The best part of this dog park is that just south of it is a second dog park specifically and only for small dogs. It's a hoot to hang out in, whether or not you bring a pooch with you.

The old zoo is a great place to hike, and also experience a fun level of creepiness - it's literally an old/abandoned zoo, and you can hike into the former animal enclosures (which now house some pretty impressive layers of graffiti).

Highland Theatre is an old school movie theater. It's not fancy, it's rarely too crowded, it's cheap, and we really love it here. A pretty great night out is pizza at Folliero's and then a movie at Highland Theatre.
