When entering, the visitor is amazed by the elegance, good taste, and new trends in dishes presentation and service as a result of the minimalistic concept that prevails in this restaurant. The main attraction, besides the quality of the food, is the privileged scenery with a unique view over the mouth of river Almendares and the sea. The concept, decoration and the very practice of the culinary art seem to be aim at creating an exclusive experience between the river and the sea. Advisable for: Fusion (Design, Author's), Stylized Cuban Cuisine. Address: Calle 3ra y Final # 11, La Puntilla, Miramar, Playa. Phone: (+53) 7209 4838

Sergio García Macías runs one of the busiest restaurants in Havana (especially at lunchtime), El Aljibe, which features a 62-year-old secret recipe for roast chicken that has drawn the likes of Hollywood star Jack Nicholson and former President Jimmy Carter. This is a great place for Creole food, as well as the chicken and the rice, which are excellent, and the French fries and fresh bread to complement. There are several places in Havana where children can have safe and healthy fun. One of these is Isla del Coco, or Coco Island Park, also known as Coney Island, for its previous name. The park’s current name, Isla del Coco, is based on a famous Cuban children’s story of the same name. Captain Plin, the leader of the island, and his friends, who were all born out of coconuts, welcome kids and adults to the amusement park.

The Acuario Nacional de Cuba opened on January 23, 1960, with just 13 fish tanks in place, but it gave visitors the opportunity to see several fish and sea invertebrate creatures. The number of tanks increased, giving room to new species until 1973, a year that was marked by the arrival of Silvia, a seal that became the most popular creature among visitors. Later, in the 80s, a show was introduced with two dolphins, Diana and Ciclón.

Occupying a whole block, the park delimited by 17, 15, 6 and 8 Streets had been unofficially known as John Lennon for years and had been a popular meeting place for young people and sometimes impromptu concert venue. To mark the 20th anniversary of the Beatle’s assassination in New York, a life-size bronze statue of John Lennon, made by Cuban sculptor José Villa Soberón, was unveiled by Fidel Castro in December 2000.

Studded with architectural jewels spanning five centuries, Habana Vieja (Old Havana) enchants visitors with one of the finest ensembles of urban edifices in the Americas. At a conservative estimate, Old Havana contains over 900 buildings of historical importance, with myriad examples of illustrious architecture ranging from intricate 17th-century baroque and 19th-century neoclassical to glitzy Art Deco. A UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1982, as is Havana’s grand El Morro-Cabaña fortress complex, Habana Vieja is usually the first stop on the tourist trail and the main focus of exploration.

Designed by Italian engineer Juan Bautista Antonelli and built by slaves with rocks extracted from the moats in the last decades of the 16th century, the Morro Castle to defend the town of San Cristobal de la Habana. However, due to economic problems and contradictions among Cuba’s governors and Antonelli, construction works took 30 years and were not completed until the 17th century. The floor is a polygon adapted to the elevated rock it was built on. It has two bastions, Tejada and Austria, and a semibastion on the elevation, facing the sea. Another interesting feature are the holes in the back walls through which prisoners were fed to the sharks.

The original lighthouse at the Castillo de los Tres Reyes del Morro was erected on the Morrillo Semibastion and was fueled by wood until the 17th century, then by gas until the 19th century and finally by oil. The lighthouse was later demolished and a new one was built by the Real Cuerpo de Ingenieros in 1844. It received the name of O’Donnell Lighthouse and was electrified in 1945. Now a symbol of Havana, it offers one of the most beautiful views of the city, especially at sunset.

This fountain, which is known by either name, is a representation of the mythical Indian woman called Habana, the wife of cacique Habaguanex who ruled in the area before the arrival of Columbus. The fountain, which is around three meters high, was brought from Italy in 1837 and designed by the Italian architect Giuseppe Gaggini. Made in white Carrara marble, the Indian woman sits on a pedestal surrounded by four dolphins, which are the dispensers of the water that falls on huge shells. She is adorned with a crown of feathers, while on her left hand she holds a cornucopia of Cuban fruits. On her right hand, she holds an oval shield bearing the city’s coat of arms.

Across from Parque Central, the Tacón Theater was inaugurated in April, 1838. At the time, this was Havana’s most important theater and arguably one of the best in the continent for its elegance, comfort and exceptional technical preparation. Years later, in 1914, the theater itself and the buildings around it were purchased to build in that location the Centro Gallego, which took up the entire block.. The construction of this center, one of the most important of its kind in the city, was commissioned to the US Company Purdy & Henderson. Inside, the old Tacón Theater was remodeled, integrating it with the new elements.

In the middle of the construction works (1748-1750), the Jesuits were expelled from every Spanish possession by royal decree; consequently, they had to leave Cuba and their property as confiscated by the colonial Government. The works of the church were interrupted, as it was decided that the edifice would be dedicated to the main parish, which was completed in 1777. In 1782, the church was consecrated as the Cathedral of Havana, being officially confirmed in 1793.

It has certainly been around the block since it first opened its doors over 200 years ago and the bronze bust of Hemmingway drinking his customary daiquiri is testament to its most famous patron who once reportedly put 13 double daiquiris away in one sitting. Opened in 1817 under the name Piña de Plata, later Florida in 1910 and El Floridita in 1914, this bar and restaurant became world-known thanks to author Ernest Hemingway, who was a regular costumer. The writer has ended up being the main attraction for tourists from all over the world, who visit “the cradle of daiquiri” and take their pictures either by the bronze bust sculpted in 1954 and placed in his favorite corner.

With Brother Tomás Linares del Castillo as its first rector, the first university in Cuba, the Real y Pontificia Universidad de San Gerónimo de La Habana, was created in 1728. After several reforms, the university became a lay institution, changing its name to Real y Literaria Universidad de La Habana. Scientific studies gained importance during that time, making an impact on students such as Carlos Manuel de Céspedes, the Father of the Homeland; historian Antonio Bachiller y Morales; Felipe Poey, founder of the Real Academia de Ciencias Médicas; and economist and lawyer Francisco de Arango y Parreño, as well as on the thinking of the time in general. The Malecón (officially Avenida de Maceo) is a broad esplanade, roadway and seawall which stretches for 8 km (5 miles) along the coast in Havana, Cuba, from the mouth of Havana Harbor in Old Havana, along the north side of the Centro Habana neighborhood, ending in the Vedado neighborhood. Construction of the Malecón began in 1901, during temporary U.S. military rule. The main purpose of building the Malecón was to protect Havana from the water and the so-called Nortes, but in reality, it would end up serving more for nighttime promenades by Habaneros, for lovers and most of all for individual fishermen.

Opened in 1953, this is Cuba’s second largest church, which is visible for several blocks due to its vast dome built in Roman-Byzantine style. The Jesús de Miramar church boasts 14 large mural paintings by Cesareo Marciano Hombrados y de Onativia. In one station, the artist portrayed himself as one of the executioners disrobing Jesus; and in another he used his wife, Sara Margarita Fernández, as the model for Virgin Mary. Curiously enough, most of the people who paid for these murals were included in the crowd scenes. In the garden there is a 1.8-meter-tall sculpture made of Carrara marble, a copy of the Virgin of Our Lady of Lourdes.

This scale model of Havana is the third largest scale model in the world. It was built at a scale of 1:1000 and spans over 144 square meters. It is approximately 22 meters long and 10 meters wide and weighs six tons. A team of nine designers, model makers and architects led by Orlando Martorell worked for eleven years to build a detailed model of the Cuban capital mostly out of Habano cigar boxes, cardboard, sponge, plastic and sand. In order to give the visitor an idea of the constructive evolution of the city, the buildings are displayed through the use of different colors–brown for the colonial period, i.e. until 1898; ochre for the Republican period, from 1902 - 1959; 1959 - present days

The succession of parabolic arcs made of reinforced concrete in contrast to the three stories of rectangular windows which alternate with the arcs create a sense of motion and modernity, accentuated by a synthetic Santa Rica de Casia, by sculptor Rita Longa. The commitment to Art Deco codes in the interior of the church is reasserted by the rectangular geometric lines of the belfry. The church itself is unremarkable, but if you are keen on the work of renowned Cuban sculptress Rita Longa, you will want to see the statue inside, her interpretation of this 14th-century Italian saint.
