There are many historic buildings, country mansions and castles in the area, all with beautiful gardens and forest walks. Here are a few of my favourites.
Take a stroll around the log cabins and the ancient agrarian landscape. Go for a walk around the lake. Churn butter. Get up close to a Lindesröd pig. Say hello to a 19th-century farmer. Feel the bark of a “warden tree”. Enjoy a freshly-baked traditional Swedish “fika” in the café. The hamlet consists of four farms and are built of oak and pine with roofs of thatch and shingle. The oldest from the early 1600s, and the youngest built in 1850. There is much that indicates that people have lived here for several thousand years. Settlements have been discovered with cooking pits that can be dated back to the Bronze Age 2700 years ago. https://www.askhultsby.se/en

Gunnebo House was constructed at the end of the 18th century as a summer residence in the neoclassical style for John Hall, at the time one of the wealthiest men in Gothenburg. Tjolöholm castle was built in 1898-1904 and the architecture is a mix of 14th century English style, Art Noveau and innovative design features. The premises include nearly 30 buildings, several beautiful gardens and widespread nature. The castle is located on a peninsula with rich flora and fauna and you can choose from plenty of different walking routes through oak forests, beach meadows, barren cliffs and stop at outlooks and beaches. Guided tours of the castle is available and you can visit the property all year round. Tjolöholm castle has also a popular restaurant and café. http://www.tjoloholm.se/en/

My favourite building in the area. It's a cute little pink castle that looks like a giant sized dolls house. You can't go in as it's a private residence but worth a peek if you are driving in the area.

In Rydal there is Sweden's oldest preserved spinning mill. The spinning machines in the machine hall, stand row by row and have been there since the 1940s. The exhibitions tell you about the village's textile history and display local art and design. If you wish to view the display you can request on the museum's website or by telephone. https://www.upplevmark.com/sv/48339/Rydals-museum/

The town centre You can shop in picturesque turn-of-the-century settings in the town centre. Kungsbacka has been synonymous with trade and markets ever since the 14th century, when sword swallowers and tightrope walkers would jostle with livestock sellers and milliners. Today, Kungsbacka is one of western Sweden’s largest trade centres. Genuinity and tradition still live on here alongside new trends and modern shopping malls. Kungsbacka Market On the first Thursday of every month (except bank holidays), all year round, vendors and market-goers flock to Kungsbacka Market. It’s been this way for over 600 years. Market music is performed in the church and cafés, and restaurants keep longer hours. https://www.visitkungsbacka.se/en/115163/Innerstaden/

Haga is a charming neighbourhood packed with cafés and shops. It's one of the oldest neighbourhoods in Gothenburg. The pedestrian street Haga Nygata is lined with well-preserved houses, many in the characteristic Gothenburg style called "landshövdingehus" with one floor in brick and the rest in wood. Today they house plenty of independent shops and cafés. Haga is conveniently located within walking distance of the city centre, but if you arrive by tram you can get off at the stops Hagakyrkan or Järntorget. The area is found between Vasa and Linné and the main street Haga Nygata stretches from one end to the other. https://www.goteborg.com/en/haga/

Fjärås Bräcka is a geological formation that was left behind after the last ice age that lies across the Lygnern valley and dams the Lygnern lake at 15 meters above sea level. Li gravefield, which was also previously known as Stena gravefield and/or Fjärås Bräcka grave-field, is from the more recent Iron age/Viking era and it is situated on the Fjärås Bräcka western slope. There are approximately 160 ancient remains, the tallest stone, called King Frode’s stone, is 4,7 meters tall. https://www.naturumfjarasbracka.se/en/

If you want to get a flavour of the typical Swedish islands in Bohuslän without having to drive too far north. Just a 50 min drive and quick trip across on the free ferry to Öckerö is a great way to experience the beautiful Swedish island life and see those traditional red cottages balancing on their tiny rock island. Öckerö is adjoined to Hönö, Fotö and Hälsö so you can drive around and explore the island and pick your own swimming spot. https://www.goteborg.com/en/ockero/

Between Öresjöarna and Tolken, Hyltenäs hill rises majestically from the beautiful landscape. From the top of the hill, the view of Mark's dense forests and glittering streams is fantastic. The merchant George Seaton built a hunting castle at the top of the hill at the beginning of the 20th century. Enjoy the picnic at the at the castle ruin where the views are incredible. Along the foot of the hill, a walking trail runs right by the water's edge. https://www.upplevmark.com/sv/46077/Hyltenas-kulle/

Jonsered Gardens, or Jonsereds Trädgårdar in Swedish, are situated just outside of Gothenburg. With a heritage that stretches back to the 1800s the gardens are now at the cutting edge of organic growing and social responsibility. In 2015, Jonsered Gardens won the Elmia Park Inspira award as Sweden’s most inspiring park in the category of newly created parks. There's a cosy café on the grounds, and the old gatehouse has been transformed in to a handicraft studio and shop. https://www.goteborg.com/en/jonsered-gardens/
