Serving Scottish pub food and real ale for over 600 years, with a similarly veteran skittle alley. Duddingston has the feel of a small village with the Sheeps Heid an integral part. A lovely walk through the Queens Park past the Loch takes you to this Inn. The Skittle Alley is still available though expect to put up your own skittles before knocking them down.

Its just the best Indian restaurant in town. Tapas style though the portions are still generous. It gets busy and though you can book it always has space for walk in. Busy times tend to be 6.30-8pm. Get in around 5.30-6pm or book. The food is brilliant - butter chicken, chaana dall, and some garlic nan. Yum.

Hidden Gem - I have yet to try this restaurant and will update my suggestion when I have. I do know it receives great reviews and is just 5 minutes from the flat. Everything at Aizle is made in-house, from the nutritious live ferment in the sourdough, to the hand churned butter, to the aquavit and aged kombucha in our cocktails. They even claim to grow their own selection of herbs and vegetables out back when the weather permits.

The Bass Rock has been described by Sir David Attenborough as 'one of the 12 wildlife wonders of the world' and Chris Packham has described 'this gannet-capped island' as the most exciting birding spectacle in the UK. North of the Bass is rated as the third best cliff dive in Britain. Closer to shore green, brown and red seaweeds and oarweed, festoon the rocks, jostling with mussels whelks, limpets and winkles for space. You leave by boat from North Berwick - can be reached by train, bus or car. Great trip out for the day. Do check for sailing times and most likely .... book.

At the West end of Princes Street is a large church and at the East end The Scott Monument rests. In between you will find the Scottish National Art Gallery. Both the gallery and the monument are worth a visit. In November the Scott monument is home to a garden of remembrance. The gardens are built in the bottom of the drained loch that surrounds Edinburgh Castle. So when you get down into the lower parts of the gardens you are isolated from the noise of the city. During the winter months they become an event venue with a Xmas market as part of Edinburgh's famous Hogmanay Party.

A magical experience? Definitely. But the Camera Obscura is powered by nothing but daylight. Part pinhole camera, part periscope. It was the first time the Victorians saw a moving image. Now you can see it too. Look up in the viewing chamber and you’ll see a metal tube coming from the ceiling. This is where all the Camera Obscura’s secrets are hidden. The tube passes through the roof of the tower and into the open air. Outside, it’s covered by a protective hood with a tiny window in one side – this lets the daylight in. Once these light rays enter the tube, they hit a carefully-positioned mirror and beam downwards. Next, they pass through a set of three lenses – to focus a stunning image

Inchcolm Abbey was established on this island originally as a priory by David I in 1235. It is the best-preserved group of monastic buildings in Scotland. It was the dream of Alexander I to establish a monastery on the island after he sheltered on it during a storm. But following his death, it was his brother David I who invited Augustinian canons to establish a priory, which was later given full abbey status. The abbey has a dramatic location which you can see from the boat before you arrive on the island. The medieval stone screens inside the belltower are rare survivals of medieval church fixtures and the 13th century well-painting is a rare medieval fresco.
