Chilli pan mee, one of the most popular dishes in the Klang Valley, is a bowl of dry pan mee (flat flour noodles) served with minced pork, anchovies, fried onions, and topped with a poached egg. The key ingredient that makes a bowl of chilli pan mee awesome lies in the dry chilli mix that is served alongside the chilli pan mee. The dish also comes with a bowl of soup with sweet potato leaves.

Jalan Alor is a unique food destination in the heart of Kuala Lumpur. The whole character of the city changes when you step onto the street. Gone are the modern shopping malls that align the city, which are replaced with something of the past age. During the day, there is not much activity but when the sun goes down, the street will be hustling and bustling with activity.

There are two Hokkien Mee restaurants in Petaling Street that worth trying. One is of course the well-known Kim Lian Kee, which is widely recognized as the birth place of Hokkien Mee. It has two separate shops at the junction of Petaling Street. Opt for the old shop (open after 5:30pm) located opposite of Hong Leong Bank if you are craving for the original charcoal stir-fried Hokkien Mee. Another Hokkien Mee stall is hidden at the back lane of Lai Foong Kopitiam. It has been around for more than 60 years. After half a century, the third generation still insists on stir-frying the noodles in traditional way with charcoal fire. The thick and sticky Hokkien Mee has sufficient “wok hei” and plenty of fried pork lards thrown in

Mungo Jerry is a longstanding stalwart in Malaysia’s Chinese food scene, specialising in bah kut teh. Literally translated bah kut teh means pork bone tea, and this local dish is a Malaysian favourite, especially around dinnertime. The lean and tender pork ribs simmered in a complex broth of herbs and spices is done really well in this air-conditioned restaurant set along Jalan Raja Laut. There are two reasons the bah kut teh here stands out – regular bah kut teh restaurants serve white rice with their soup, but Mungo Jerry has a choice of onion fried rice to accompany it. A little oily and sticky, it provides the perfect counterpoint to the sweet, fragrant soup. The second reason to visit

A Cantonese restaurant set in Maju Junction Mall, it is only a five-minute walk from Jalan Raja Laut to Maju Palace Cantonese Cuisine. Flying under the popular The Oriental Group of Restaurants, this award winning restaurant impresses for a few reasons. Beyond the windows, diners are treated to views of the Kuala Lumpur skyline and the restaurant is decorated in 1920s old Hong Kong style. As a result, it has an exquisite atmosphere, with gold star service and gourmet food in an intimate yet unpretentious dim sum dining experience. The kitchen deserves rave reviews for its refined cooking, with a winning formula of authentic fare that uses local cooking methods and ingredients such as market

Samudra Exotic Riverfish Restaurant is a seafood eatery with a menu that stays true to its namesake – sure, there are non-fish items on the menu, but you will be missing out if you do not partake. The most rave worthy dish is ikan patin buah masak asam tempoyak (silver catfish in creamy, fermented durian gravy). It is truly delicious and goes just great with plain, fluffy white rice. However, for those looking for something not too spicy, we suggest the fleshy and juicy ikan tapah (native Southeast Asian fish wallago attu) fried in turmeric powder – as wonderfully unique as it is flavourful. The interior design of the restaurant is modern and minimalist with white tiles, plastic tables and

A hub of good Chinese food, Ong Lai (Goh Kee) Restaurant is another great find along spritely Jalan Raja Laut. An atmospheric, traditional seafood restaurant it has its operation down pat, with no-nonsense service that is very efficient. Patrons are invited to dine amongst typical rounded tables, which results in a fun dining atmosphere at its best. Soft shell chilli crab and buttered tiger prawns take pride of place on the menu, but we think the pineapple sweet sour ribs are its best calling card. Dine in or takeaway, Ong Lai (Goh Kee) Restaurant is a classic location for a faultless, mid-week meal.

A combination of commercial lots on its lower levels and residential spaces on the upper floors, you will have access to seven stories of fashion accessories, clothes, costume jewellery, electronics, watches, sunglasses, perfume, souvenirs and gifts at Plaza GM. The best part about shopping in this fully air-conditioned complex is the truly inexpensive price tags you will find. Vendors are a mix of Chinese locals and Indonesian immigrants, and they are always more than happy to bargain, but prices are already super reasonable so they do not get very much lower. The only downside is that the pathways between stores are pretty narrow, which makes for an uncomfortable window shopping experien

This daily wet-and-sundry market serving the Chinese and Malay working class of Chow Kit may occupy a slick new building and the surrounding alleyways, but it hasn't lost its heady, chaotic atmosphere. Though the stalls are now easier to navigate, you'll find the same hangars loaded with fruit, veggies and freshly butchered meat, with vendors shouting their prices to drum up business. Spilling out from the main fruit and veg market there's a warren of stalls selling clothes, toys and other commodities. You can also sample hawker and kopitiam food and drinks here.

Taking place at the northern end of Jalan Tunku Abdul Rahman, Chow Kit Market is divided into two sections – a wet market and dry bazaar. The area may have a notorious reputation (largely because it hosts the city’s red light district), but it is one of the liveliest and culturally enriching scenes in Kuala Lumpur. What makes it all the more exciting is the fact that vendors are loud and pushy, which might seem daunting at first, but persist with negotiating tactics and you will be rewarded with smiles and some extras thrown in, especially if they like your bargaining skills. Shaded by oversized, colourful umbrellas in a kaleidoscope of colours, there is so much to buy here. The spice-frag
