Standing tall at the southern end of Studland Bay is one of the most famous landmarks on the South Coast – Old Harry. The chalk formations are popularly know as Old Harry Rocks, but the name actually refers to the single stack of chalk standing furthest out to sea. Until 1896 there was another stack known as Old Harry’s Wife, but erosion caused her to tumble into the sea, leaving just a stump. Thousands of years ago, Old Harry and The Needles on the Isle of Wight were linked by a line of chalk hills that eroded away during the last ice age. They are part of the Jurassic Coast World Heritage Site and managed by the National Trust. You can walk to Old Harry along the South West Coast Path.

Eroded by time and nature, Durdle Door is one of Dorset’s most photographed and iconic landmarks. It is located on the Lulworth Estate in south Dorset and is part of the Jurassic Coast. The coastline is of such international geological importance that it was designated England’s first natural World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 2001 and is now part of a family of natural wonders including America’s Grand Canyon and Australia’s Great Barrier Reef. The magnificent natural limestone arch was formed when the power of the waves eroded the rock and forged a hole through the middle. The name Durdle is derived from an old English word ‘thirl’, which means to pierce, bore or drill. As you look towards
