Five minutes south-east of Bass Coast’s main business hub Wonthaggi, Cape Paterson is a haven for families in summer. The beaches come alive with sand castles, boogie boards and ball games during the hot summer months. Snorkelling at the main beach allows you a glimpse into the underwater world. Also at the main beach is the popular ocean swimming pool (rock pool) which was built in the 1960’s. The rock pool is great to play in, can sometimes be underwater depending on the tide. This is favourite must visit place of ours during summer.

Several cliff top car parks such as Shack Bay and Eagles Nest allow you to spend more time enjoying the seaside beaches and rock platforms.  Low tide is the best for exploring this stretch of coast. The Caves and Flat Rocks area close to Inverloch is well known for the Dinosaur Dreaming Fossil site. Stop and learn more about the fossils that have been discovered or try your luck at finding the dinosaur footprint. Take it slow as the road is curvy!! A popular road for motorbike enthusiasts too!!

Coastal walk (bushwalking) taking in farmland and ocean views. Can be steep in parts and not pram friendly all of the way. Approx 7km each way. Ease of walk is described as a step above a casual stroll. Trestle bridge at Kilcunda a must see while doing the walk. Entry at Kilcunda opposite the Kilcunda general store (a great coffee stop too!) and hotel. A lighthouse was established at Cape Liptrap in 1913 to improve the safety of coastal shipping. In 1951 the steel tower was dismantled and replaced with the current structure. The light is still in operation and has a range of 18 nautical miles (over 34km). Cape Liptrap Coastal Park was declared in 1997. Take care, the road is generally dusty and can be corrugated. Our advice, drive slowly, the views are well worth it!

The Tarwin river has fishing recreational fishing platforms, allows for canoeing upstream from boat ramp and jetty. IGA and fuel is available in town. Great hotel for bistro meals, the 'old style country pub'. Following on from Tarwin towards the beach is the beachside township of Venus Bay. Take care if swimming at surf beaches in Venus bay, recommend swimming between the flags when lifesavers are on duty.

Coal Creek was established in 1974 when a new home for the old Korumburra Courthouse was required. From this single building a historic village was born. The park has undergone many changes over its 40+ years of operation, all of these changes culminating in an authentic feeling coal mining village spanning from the 1870s to the 1920s. Coal Creek Community Park and Museum is home to around 30,000 objects ranging from trains to thimbles. Each piece is important as it helps us to tell the story of life in South Gippsland during pioneer times. In 2014 Coal Creek Community park and Museum attained museum accreditation through the Museum Accreditation. Open Thurs - Mon, 10am -4.30pm FREE ENTRY
