One of Baltimore two largest art museums... The Baltimore Museum of Art (BMA) is home to an internationally renowned collection of 19th-century, modern, and contemporary art. Founded in 1914 with a single painting, the BMA today has 90,000 works of art-including the largest holding of works by Henri Matisse in the world.
The museum is currently undergoing an unprecedented $28 million renovation to provide visitors with a more welcoming environment and more imaginative and inspiring encounters with art. Visitors can enjoy its outstanding selection of European and American painting and sculpture from the 17th through 20th centuries and the newly reinstalled Contemporary Wing with 14 galleries showcasing the art of our time. Two beautifully landscaped gardens display an array of 20th-century sculpture that is an oasis in the city.
The museum's 100th anniversary will be celebrated in November 2014 with the reopening of the grand historic entrance designed by John Russell Pope and a beautiful new presentation of the museum's distinguished collection of American art. Subsequent reopenings include expanded galleries for the African and Asian art collections and a new learning and creativity center that will open in 2015. The little house at 203 North Amity Street (originally No. 3 Amity) was presumably built around 1830 for Charles Klassen. Late in 1832 or early in 1833, Maria Clemm (aged 43) moved from East Baltimore to the countryside. Her household included herself, her ailing mother (Elizabeth Cairnes Poe, aged 73), her daughter (Virginia Eliza Clemm, aged 10) her nephew (Edgar Allan Poe, aged 23) and perhaps her son (Henry Clemm, aged 14). (Henry Clemm should not be confused with Poe’s brother, also named Henry, who died in 1831. Little is known about Henry Clemm, who, according to Amelia F. Poe was born on September 10, 1818 and “died young and unmarried.” Maria Clemm rented the house primarily with money from her mother’s government pension, awarded in recognition of Major David Poe, Sr.’s prominent service during the Revolutionary War. (David Poe was the Quartermaster General for the city of Baltimore.) Edgar A. Poe left this house in August or September of 1835, moving to Richmond, Virginia to edit the Southern Literary Messenger. About the same time, Elizabeth Cairnes Poe died and her pension stopped. Maria was quickly unable to cover the rent and had no option other than to move. Edgar’s cousin Neilson Poe, who lived in Baltimore and had married Virginia’s half-sister, offered to take in both Virginia and Maria. Edgar, fearing that he was losing his little family, proposed to Virginia in a remarkably emotional letter. She accepted and by October 7, 1835 Virginia and Maria moved with Poe to Richmond. This building was saved from demolition in 1941 by the Edgar Allan Poe Society of Baltimore.

Now the site of Oriole Park at Camden Yards, Camden Station was the Baltimore terminus of the B&O Railroad. It was from here that the battered 6th Massachusetts entrained for Washington. A large slave jail was located just north of the yards, where the military provost marshal detained suspects. Lincoln arrived here on his way to deliver the Gettysburg Address, and in 1865 his funeral train brought his body here on the long procession back to Springfield, Ill.
