Bushwalks and Lookouts

There are endless bushwalks in the Blue Mountains, far too many to list but this is a selection of must dos.
My favourite lookout in the Mountains is Govett's Leap , at the end of Govett's Leap Road, Blackheath. The view over the Grose Valley is breathtaking. A spectacular 180m waterfall drops straight down to the base of the cliff and there are a number of walks that lead from there. A clifftop walk can be taken either direction, towards Evans Lookout (6km return, 3hrs) or Pulpit Rock (unless the track is still being repaired), both of which are similarly spectacular, through windswept heathland, she-oaks, banksias and mallee scrub, with wildflowers in spring. See yellow-tailed black cockatoos and king parrots, among other native birdlife. On the way down to the lookout drop into the Blue Mountain Heritage Centre for information on what to see and do in the Blue Mountains. You can also access the easy and wheelchair accessible Fairfax Heritage track from the Heritage Centre (40 mins) winding over gentle slopes, skirting the edge of a unique hanging swamp, then through a forest of scribbly and peppermint gums and grass trees, Waratahs and other wildflowers to George Phillips and Govetts Leap lookouts with expansive views of the Gross Valley, Govetts Gorge and Jungle Falls. Head back the same way or 500 meters up the unsealed Govetts Leap Road to the Heritage Centre. there are

Echo Point Lookout, with its breathtaking view of the iconic Three Sisters and the magnificent Jamison Valley, is something very definitely not to be missed for any visitor to Katoomba. On the southern side of the plateau on which Katoomba and Leura sit this is where the land falls dramatically away into the canyon of the Jamison Valley. Echo Point lookout is the gateway to many great walks and nature experiences in the area. At least take the short, easy walk from the lookout to the Three Sisters. Well worth the time is the Prince Henry Cliff walk which connects Echo Point to Leura Cascades and takes you past many scenic lookouts along the cliff edge. The Giant Stairway is a steep, 998 step descent from Echo Point to Honeymoon Bridge, which connects to the first sister and to the tracks below the cliffs. The famous Three Sisters were formed by erosion many thousands of years ago and form part of the spectacular cliffs that surround the Jamison Valley. From the lookout you can also see Mount Solitary and the Ruined Castle rock formation. This is on the land of the Gundungarra and Darug People, the traditional custodians of this part of the Blue Mountains.

This is a spectacular lookout near Blackheath with magnificent views over the Grose Valley with dramatic sandstone cliffs and waterfalls. Cliff Top walking track between Govetts Leap and Evans lookout offers some of the most breath taking scenic views in all of the Blue Mountains. You'll be spoiled with birdwatching, wildflowers, and plenty of lookouts along the way. 6km return - 3 hrs Passing through dense, windswept heathland, you’ll see she-oaks, banksias and stunted mallee scrub. It’s a great area for birdwatching, so keep your eyes peeled for yellow-tailed black cockatoos and king parrots. The heath comes alive with colourful displays of wildflowers in spring, attracting nectar-loving birds such as the white-naped honeyeater. 6.3 km loop - 3.5 hrs Sandstone walls, waterfalls and abundant native plants line Grand Canyon track near Blackheath. The historic loop track takes you into the heart of this World Heritage-listed landscape. It's an intimate, adventurous, and popular track which walkers have trodden since 1907. Setting out from Grand Canyon carpark this well-shaded track meanders through luscious native vegetation of ferns and golden wattles and remains close to Greaves Creek. Although there are loads of semi-ledges which make up this challenging walk, it is one of the rare locations where you don’t need specialist hiking or abseiling equipment to explore a canyon.
