This bar is extraordinary. The owner knows every bottle of his stock of hundreds if not thousands of beers, wines, whiskies, spirits. If you can reservea table with the charcuterie tray, you're in for a surprise. The tray is groaning with sausages, cured meats, boudin, andouillette, pates, rillettes. You eat as much as you want for a price per person. I love this place.

This bar is not glamorous, but has some of the tables looking over the Vidourle by the Roman bridge in Sommieres. Great place to stop and look at the surroundings.

This restaurant in the wine-making centre of St Christol is truly exceptional. Great for lunch or dinner: a foodie menu with interesting apéritifs, carefully selected wines. Not all that cheap - but probably no more than €50 a head if you really go for it. You can eat outside in the summer.

Excellent bakery just 5 mins drive from the house - and next to the nearest small supermarket. The Italian couple who run it like to talk, so don't expect to get out in a hurry. Delicious cakes, sandwiches and breads.

You can eat or drink here in the evening - lovely square in Sommieres. When the market is on every Saturday, you can sit and eat and get drinks while you eat delicious food you've bought in the market.

Nearest big beach, about 10km long between La Grande Motte and Carnon. What else is there to say? It's lovely. Ideal for everyone.

The Carrieres du Bon Temps are great for a walk from the house in Junas. In 5 minutes you are in the garrigue landscape, follow paths down to the quarry (where you'll see the stage used for concerts during the annual July Jazz festival).

Further from Junas, about 45 mins / 1 hour away. Ideal for a whole-day beach trip. The further you walk, the more isolated you'll be; but keep walking and you'll find that naturists are in the majority. So settle wherever you feel comfortable. Beautiful beach. Beware very heavy traffic near le Grau de Roi at peak times for leaving the beach in the summer.

Beware very heavy traffic near le Grau de Roi at peak times for leaving the beach in the summer.
This is a good place to park for a hike up to the tiny chapel at the top of the Pic St Loup. Walking fast, it's 1.5 hours to the top and the same back to the car park. Allow 2 hours each way for a walk at a more leisurely pace. Stunning views at the top and much of the way up and down. Remember too that pretty much any wine made on the Pic St Loup will be delicious. Allow about an hour to get there from Junas.

The bambouseraie near Anduze is a beautiful collection of more varieties of bamboo than you knew existed. Stunning Japanese garden. Well worth the trip.

Lovely small town. Worth stopping to have a look around - especially the Chappe Telegraph! While we were doing the house up, we used to stop on the way back from work at the small bar (Bar/Brasserie la Renaissance) on the square next to the Mairie. Lovely spot.
