Sightseeing

lovely wee village with two amazing beach's and a sizeable playpark with a tarmac football/basketball pitch/court. Lots of historic buildings. 2000 year old Brochs (with a small brewery nearby!) and an old army barracks built in 1717 around the Jacobite rising. There is also a crossing from Glenelg over to Skye via a short turntable ferry which is a very unique experience. (Last operating turntable ferry in the world!) Further along from Glenelg is a beautifull little hamlet call Arrnisdale. Although not much to do here apart from some coastal walks, it is just a stunning place to be, with an abundance of wildlife. The road here also offers some stunning high pass views over to Eigg and Rum and to Skye that are worth heading out to even if you don't plan on going all the way to Arrnisdale.

If you keep heading west out of Ratagan in the direction of the castle you will pass through Letterfern en route to Totaig. You will come to a dead end where you can park near to the gateposts of a drive where the road surface changes (old & weedy) and you follow the road by foot down the hill, past the wee white house that sits on its own directly opposite Eilean Donan Castle. Continue on until you come to a forestry gate. Keep going and you will eventually come to Totaig Broch. For an amazing vista,.continue up the hill and you will come to a clearing where you can see the Skye Bridge and also great views up loch Long past the castle.

A stunning wee village with stunning views and a slower pace of life (partly due to the free roaming cows) Great places to eat and drink. Film location for The Wickerman starring Edward Woodward and more recently Hamish Macbeth starring Robert Carlisle.

A quaint wee village with stunning views and great restaurants, lovely beaches too. A word of warning, the Bealach na Bà, which is the narrow, single-track road with switchback, hairpin bends is not for the faint hearted or nervous driver!

Eilean Donan is recognised as one of the most iconic images of Scotland  all over the world. Situated on an island at the point where three great sea lochs meet, and surrounded by some majestic scenery, it is little wonder that the castle is now one of the most visited and important attractions in the Scottish Highlands. Although first inhabited around the 6th century, the first fortified castle was built in the mid 13th century and stood guard over the lands of Kintail. Since then, at least four different versions of the castle have been built and re-built as the feudal history of Scotland unfolded through the centuries. Partially destroyed in a Jacobite uprising in 1719, Eilean Donan lay in ruins for the best part of 200 years until Lieutenant Colonel John MacRae-Gilstrap bought the island in 1911 and proceeded to restore the castle to its former glory. After 20 years of toil and labour the castle was re-opened in 1932.

Newly refurbished restaurant. Great menu and bar with nice decor. There is fuel here, but be warned, it's the most expensive in the area. Fortunately the restaurant is more competitively priced.
