Fitzroys A must for foodies - Michelin guide 2020 Decked with smooth oak furniture, huge black-framed sash windows and an art deco typeface, Fitzroy is unlike any other Fowey eatery in style. The menu sticks to sophisticated sharing plates, with an emphasis on seasonal seafood. Fill your table with fried sprats, ray wing with chicken butter sauce, raw sea bass with chilli and cucumber, and red napa cabbage with plum and sesame. It’s an open kitchen, so you can watch the chefs at work while sipping a glass of homemade vermouth

Appletons Italian dishes with a contemporary twist. So expect the likes of prosecco-battered polenta chips with ‘nduja ketchup; rose harissa fish stew with fregola sarda and rye toast; squid ink linguine with Padstow crab and anchovy pangrattato; and strawberry and lemon balm panna cotta for dessert. It’s also set to be the best place in Fowey for a negroni – there are a dozen types to choose from, including a negroni violetta, with its heady parma violet flavour. You’ll find both Italian and Cornish wine on the menu, with bottles from Trevibban Mill Estate taking precedence – try a glass of Black Ewe white sparkling, for its fine bubbles and green apple, lemon and sherbet notes.

Everyone's favourite brekkie stop in Fowey, this friendly cafe is a riot of character, from the brightly coloured furniture and polka-dot bunting to the vintage Action Men on the shelves. Wolf down a Fat Buoy brekkie or a classic fish-finger butty, washed down with a mug of good old English tea.

This once RNLI lifeboat station began as old boat house and slip way all of 150 years ago and although we don’t do anything as dramatic as save lives anymore, we can certainly still put smiles on peoples faces with Sam’s tried and tested formula of great food, great staff and great atmosphere. With it’s custom-built wood burning pizza oven churning out artisan slices of heaven, combined with the traditionally exceptional seafood that has become so familiar at Sam’s, The Beach is truly a Combers’ paradise. The open kitchen allows you to see all the action inside, while the floor to ceiling windows bring the outside in during the cold winter months, allowing you to bask in the beauty of Polkerris harbour and the whole of St Austell Bay beyond. During the summer we lose the windows altogether and just let the light shine on in. Think Ibizan bistro, blissed out beats and cool cocktails. Lazing on the terrace, soaking up the sun – a vibe that has to be experienced first hand to be fully appreciated. So if any of this sounds appealing and let’s be honest it all does then follow the signs from Par where tucked away down a Cornish lane you’ll find Sam’s on The Beach, a great place to escape to – whatever the weather.

An acclaimed beachside restaurant which serves up one of the most memorable dining experiences in Cornwall – if not the UK. Over the course of 25 years, the team have built an enviable reputation for combining Asian and Mediterranean influences in dishes showcasing the freshest seafood, garden grown produce and foraged coastal ingredients. The iconic whitewashed restaurant and terrace enjoys spectacular panoramic views of St Ives Bay. The town’s historic harbour, Godrevy Lighthouse and miles of golden sands can all be enjoyed from this special vantage point. In the summer, the Beach Café provides a retreat from the sun-scorched sands below; the ideal spot to indulge in vibrant dishes infused with flavour, accompanied by bottles of crisp, refreshing wine pulled dripping from popular beach bucket coolers. A new glass enclosed, heated terrace makes year round outdoor dining a pleasure. In the colder, wilder months the restaurant becomes a comfortable sanctuary for watching the storms roll in.

Dubbed the Eighth Wonder of the World by some, the Eden Project is a dramatic global garden housed in tropical biomes that nestle in a crater the size of 30 football pitches. A fascinating location, but, more importantly, Eden is a fun and family-friendly day out. Curious kids can find out where tea, rubber and sugar come from, and travel the world to the simulated environments of tropical destinations that they dream of traveling to in the future. There are themed events according to the seasons, workshops for adults and children, activity days, music concerts and much more besides

Caerhays Castle is an English Heritage Grade 1 Listed Building and currently home to the Williams family. The Castle is opened for a short spell in the Spring. Firstly it is a home. The contents show the ceaseless accumulations of its residents over the past 140 years. The geography of the house makes it impossible to give unlimited tours to large numbers of people at any one time so the size of each party is restricted to 12/15 people. There are collections on display and the displays alter year by year but include Victorian Jugs, the crockery used for running the House (19th Century Houses were very labour intensive), the Bric-a-Brac of an Edwardian Billiard Room and much more. Any house, large or small, depends upon the constant vigilance of its owner and you will see the results of the unremitting hard work of the staff in keeping everything clean, keeping wind and water out of the House and keeping at bay the ever present danger of destructive rot and termites. Over the years the House has been blessed by a long line of selfless and hard working people. It is hoped that their hard work will give pleasure to visitors as they wander around. Details of the House tour have not been reproduced so as not to spoil the enjoyment of some elements of the tour. A 170 years ago a visitor to Caerhays would have found a ruined mock Castle surrounded by a Deer Park. Caerhays has been lived in by two families since 1370.

Castle Drogo is situated high above the Teign Gorge. It was designed by Sir Edwin Lutyens for self-made millionaire Julius Drewe. It looks ancient, but this remarkable building was only constructed 100 years ago, the last castle ever built in England. From the beginning it has suffered from water penetration and is now undergoing a 6 year conservation project that will last until the end of 2019 to make it watertight. Inside you can explore the castle‘s refreshed layout and precious treasures displayed in new ways. Some rooms have become storage areas whilst others are ‘back to normal’. Outside the castle, stroll around the formal gardens or explore the Teign Valley with its ancient gorge, teeming with wildlife. Or recharge at the café with a traditional Devon cream tea or tuck into a slice of cake.

Things to do

Lostwithiel is situated in a beautiful wooded valley at the tidal reach of the River Fowey. The name comes from two Cornish words meaning the place at the end of the woodland. The town was founded by the Normans for the export of tin about 800 years ago. At that time, the river was wide and deep and ships tied up along the quay to load tin destined for many European ports. The town became the second busiest port on the south coast of England. By the 13th century Lostwithiel had become the county capital. It was the administration centre for county affairs and Cornwall's main stannary town. Ironically, tin, which was the original source of the wealth of the town, eventually caused its decline. Rubble, from the mines on the moors, silted up the river, restricting the size of vessels that could use the quay. Today there are numerous antique shops selling furniture, collectibles, ceramics and such things. Other shops, hidden in the old streets, specialise in arts and crafts, paintings, lace and patchwork. The museum is in the former Corn Exchange and has an interesting collection reflecting life in Lostwithiel over the past centuries. The local library is in a restored mediaeval house. It has an excellent selection of books on Cornwall and there are often exhibitions in the upstairs gallery.

China clay mining has shaped the landscape, lives of people and economy of mid-Cornwall for over 250 years. It is Cornwall’s largest mining industry. A fully Accredited Museum, we are based within two Victorian china clay works, now a Scheduled Ancient Monument. We tell the story of this fascinating industry and the people who worked and lived in the shadows of Cornwall’s iconic ‘white pyramids’. A visit might include: wandering around our interactive Discovery Centre, exploring historic trails, woodland walks in grounds teeming with wildlife, and spectacular views of a modern working clay pit. Our collections include working waterwheels, tools and machinery, vintage lorries and an extensive archive.

Carnglaze Caverns is a much recommended all-weather family tourist attraction near the village of St Neot, on the southern edge of Bodmin Moor in Cornwall, halfway between Liskeard and Bodmin just off the A38. Tours Underground; One of Cornwall’s and Devon’s premier underground experiences Visit this former slate mine where slate was both quarried and mined underground in Cornwall. Carnglaze is part of Cornwall’s internationally important industrial heritage where you can find out about the miners’ ingenuity and skills, and how slate roofed the Industrial Revolution. You will go on a self-guided underground tour (may be guided in high seasons) to learn how the mine was worked, ending at the Underground Lake with its crystal clear blue/green water. Browse the comprehensive collection of minerals mined and quarried in the South West, after which you will descend a flight of 60 steps taking you about 150m into the hillside and 60m below ground. Carnglaze Caverns is a constant 10°C underground, cool in Summer, warmer in Winter! A jumper and sensible footwear are recommended. As the Caverns are underground it makes for an ideal wet weather activity in Cornwall.

Tate St Ives St Ives, a small Cornish town on the southwest coast of England, perhaps seems an unlikely site for a major art gallery. However, its artistic connections date back to Victorian times when numerous artists came to St Ives to paint, attracted by its special quality of light. Artists associated with the town include Barbara Hepworth, Naum Gabo, Alfred Wallis and Mark Rothko

The Aquarium is situated on the historic Fowey Town Quay and gives a fascinating glimpse into the marine life found around the Cornish coast. Although the aquarium is small in size, our visitors are constantly amazed by the variety of marine creatures on display. In addition to a wide range of fish from the tiny gobies and shannies from the shallows up to Conger eels which inhabit deep wrecks, there are various types of crabs and lobsters lurking in the corners! Children will especially enjoy the touch pool where they can pick up a shore crab or have their fingers tickled by prawns. First established in 1952 the aquarium still retains many of the original tanks. Fresh sea water is pumped in daily at high tide and the filtration is minimal. This is a mixed blessing as keeping the clarity of the water acceptable is difficult at times but on the plus side are the various creatures such as sea-squirts, sponges and tube worms that arrive as plankton in the water and grow on in the aquarium. The majority of fish are obtained locally from local fishermen and anglers. We try to use local sources for the fish food, we are fortunate to have Ammodytes Ltd close by.
