This behemoth of a building spans four tram stops and stretches over half a mile long. But its size isn’t nearly as impressive as its history, as this building was a stronghold for anti-fascists during the 1934 Austrian Civil War. Karl Marx-Hof was completed in 1930 by architect Karl Ehn, a protege of the famous Otto Wagner, whose socialist style has had a lasting impact on Vienna’s architecture. The giant building took three years to finish.

The rooms of the Naturhistorisches, or Natural History Museum, in Vienna, Austria are astonishingly beautiful, with carved ceilings and creaking wood floors. Each room, painted a different color, is lined with dark wood cases filled with row after row of taxidermy. In some rooms, the walls are covered with the delicate, twisting vertebrae of snakes, others feature the sturdy bone shells of turtles. The display cabinets seem to come straight from an 18th century naturalist’s study, with lines of mice carefully tagged and cataloged. The museum is undeniably from another time.

Only seven underground stations away from Stephansplatz is the Alte Donau leisure oasis - a special kind of local recreation area. The contrast between the adjacent urban landscape and the idyll of the former Danube arm is particularly charming. Every year, around one million visitors are attracted to the Alte Donau. The Old Danube is a centrally located recreational paradise and a calm body of water that has something to offer for every taste and is also popular with the Viennese.

Once you have made it up the numerous steps to the roof of the Vienna Main Library (or comfortably taken the lift up), a truly fantastic view opens up to you - over the Gürtel, the city, from the Leopoldsberg to the Wienerberg. The restaurant "Oben" is the perfect place to browse through the books you may have just borrowed or for a leisurely breakfast before plunging into the hustle and bustle of nearby Mariahilfer Strasse.
