Britannia Bay's Absolute beach (some call it ''Witbaai") is for holiday visitors, and beach/sea lovers. No shops for 10 km (St Helena Bay), few people, and a bless of a beach with natural surrounding beauty and peace. This particular beach is regarded by many as one of the most beautiful beaches on the west coast, certainly populated areas. The village has in interesting history:
It takes its name from a British East Indianman which was badly damaged by a reef in the bay. Rediscovered in 1998, the wreck of the Britannia has been placed under the supervision of the Council of National Monuments.
Within walking distance (to the west) is another beautiful beach, between Duyker Island and the Great Paternoster Reserve.

Visit the most famous lighthouse in S.A., situated at Tietiesbaai, 5 km from Paternoster. Tietiesbaai is a reserve, with spectacular wild flowers during August/September flower season. But the most spectacular...the huge flat rocks leading into the sea with the waves crashing against the rocks. And see if you could spot the tietie!

Keeping track of the tides
Hide tide: great for watching, and listening, to waves breaking
Low tide: the best time to take a stroll on the beach
But whatever tides, make sure you're on the beach at sunset, preferably with a glass of..........in your hand!

As little as possible. You won't need it!
This is a place where you get rid of your fancy dresses and uncomfortable suits. Light, comfortable shoes (or no shoes), and clothes. In summer, a light jacket is recommended should the wind come up, and in winter more often than not a simple track suit will do

The local, permanent, people are easy going, friendly, and normally most helpful. Visitors tend to be the same, but......

Walking
Simply keep walking west from the house, on the beach, towards Paternoster. And if you're fit enough, try to reach Paternoster in less than 2 hours.

I love my dogs!
If you decide to take your dogs for a stroll, please keep leads handy. For smaller dogs to be be protected from bigger dogs.....and bigger dogs to be protected from smaller dogs. But when they find each other, let them loose on the beach or in the water, and experience genuine joy!
