In 1872 the Aruba Island Gold-mining Company Ltd. built a large smelting works at Bushiribana on the North coast for the gold that was being mined at Seroe Plat and in its surroundings. Although the smelting works were only in use for 10 years, the construction was so solid that the impressive ruins still remain. One can walk into the ruins and also take pictures there. A nice picture to take uses the intact windows of the ruins as a natural picture frame for a picture taken towards the ocean.

The oldest remains of the Dutch settlement and Aruba's oldest building, Fort Zoutman, was built in 1796 for protection against pirates and enemies. In 1868, the Willem III Tower was added to the Fort and served as Aruba's first public clock and as a lighthouse equipped with a spire and petrol lamp. After the light was extinguished in the tower, Fort Zoutman housed for almost a century different organizations like government offices, police department, library, post office and a prison. Today the buildings house the Historical Museum, which is a museum displaying many artifacts from Aruba's earliest through those reminiscent of colonial times up to the present day. Every Tuesday night the Bon Bini Festival takes place at the 18th century assembled Fort Zoutman in Oranjestad. Featured here are Aruban folkloric acts and typical foods at bargain prices.

Boca Catalina is a beautiful little beach that offers a great snorkeling experience with a diversity of aquatic life very close to the shore. This small inlet is located between Malmok and Arashi Beach, but is not visited as much as these beaches. A popular attraction in front of Boca Catalina is the sunken German ship wreck (the Antilla) that is sticking out of the water. However swimming to the Antilla from Boca Catalina is too far. Although this attraction is visited a lot by many catamarans and sail boats, it's still very quiet and relaxing at this beach. The best time to visit this beach is in the morning when the wind and current are not as strong. Swimming Conditions Shallow water and lots of fish make this another good choice for snorkeling. Beach facts White sand with some pebbles and stones. No nearby facilities. Accessible by car or taxi.

Drinking water

Aruba has its own water treatment systems so you can just drink water straight from the tap. The water in Aruba does not taste like chlorine because Aruba namely opted for a water treatment system without chemicals, without chlorine. In Aruba is purified and the water and disinfected by UV radiation. Bottled water in the supermarket buying is therefore certainly not necessary.

Languages

You will find that most Arubans are able to speak English well, and of course being a Dutch island with a Dutch educational system, most everyone is fluent in Dutch. About 13% of the population also speak Spanish at home as their first language of choice, and a larger part of the population can also converse in Spanish quite fluently. So these are the main three "imported" languages in which Arubans can communicate very well, in addition to our native tongue. The mother-tongue of Aruba is Papiamento.

Culture

Aruba's culture has many influences from other countries. Many believe this to degrade Aruba's culture, but the Arubans see this blend as being one of the unique things of the Aruban culture. Old traditions are mixed with modern influences, but the Arubans have their own way of making the Aruban culture their own. Some original Aruban festivities include Betico Day, Dera Gay, and the day of the Flag and Anthem. Of course Aruba also celebrates the yearly carnival. Today the Aruban population is mixed with people from South America (mainly Venezuela and Colombia), China and The Netherlands.
