West End Cafes & Restaurants

This are my picks for cafes, pastry shops, and restaurants in the Hillhead, Finnieston, and Partick areas of the city.
Wonderful coffeeshop in Hillhead with delicious, healthy food options and delicious coffee that is without a doubt one of the best in the whole city. The team running the shop are also very warm and hospitable. It is an overall lovely experience! This spot is also just minutes away from my flat!

Artisan Roast has FANTASTIC COFFEE and is a GREAT WORK AND STUDY SPACE AND MEET UP SPOT. It is an Edinburgh company but this location in the West End of Glasgow is really warm, cozy and a great place to have a cup of coffee while being able to sit down, read a book or work on your laptop. They have excellent WIFI so you can effectively work on emails or any online research you may have. Another added bonus--this is just a 3 minute walk from the University of Glasgow Campus.

Paesano has the BEST PIZZA not only in the West End but in the WHOLE CITY (this is in my humble opinion)! It is very close to the flat (about a 6 minute walk), is affordable (cheap!) and really quite a welcoming spot with really warm and friendly staff. It is a good spot to meet a friend but it can get very busy and they don't take reservations. They do have a very good take out order system which has to be done there (can't be called in) so if it is too crowded there, this is a good take away spot (especially since it is so close to the flat). Good to note that they are also on Miller Street in the City Centre if you have a pizza craving while shopping in the Centre!

This is a Cypriot inspired Cafe with lovely food, deli style (in the sense that they are prepared but all made fresh that morning!). I highly recommend the moussaka and meatballs here but honestly, I think all of their food is quite good. Kothel is also known for its many varieties of cakes (including vegan) and all are delightful! I am a particular fan of the caramel cake, the guinness chocolate cake, and the walnut cake. Kothel also has excellent wifi so if you need another space to work while eating delicious food and cake, this is a good spot! (This is also an excellent spot to hang out with friends).

This is a wonderful vegetable and fruits, deli, and organic foods and products grocery store that is near Kelvinbridge (and the subway stop) and only a 7 minute walk from the flat. The deli has very good prepared salads, soups, sandwiches, curries, pies, and fresh baked cakes and pastries. I highly recommend their fresh soups! The Roots and Fruits market on Great Western Road has three parts: Fruits and Vegetable Shop (smaller shop), Flower Shop, and larger Market that includes deli. If you are looking to shop only organic, your best bet is to shop in the Market which not only has only organic food but also natural products (including soaps, detergents, etc).

This place is FANTASTIC. AMAZING , DELICIOUS, MOUTH WATERING and VERY AFFORDABLE SANDWICHES (5 GBP). My personal favorite is the Roast BBQ Pork sandwich--which is a wee bit spicy while simultaneously being sweet! Highly recommend! Roast is a short walk from University of Glasgow as it is just on the other side of Kelvin Way (the walkway that is in the middle of/divides Kelvingrove Park.). Roast is also a good lunch spot if you are going to the Kelvingrove Musuem and Gallery as it is pretty much just across the street!

WONDERFUL SANDWICH SHOP in FINNIESTON--VERY AFFORDABLE as many of them are just around or around 5 GBP. If you are in a hurry, you can order the sandwich by phone in advance (even at the beginning of the day) and give a specific time as to when you will be by to pick it up. This is really helpful when your schedule is tight! This spot is just a walk across the Kelvingrove Park so particularly a good spot to go to when you are near the main gates or at the University of Glasgow library or gym. All you have to do is take a lovely stroll across the park to grab (or eat-in) a delectable sandwich! While all of their sandwiches are good, I particularly like their coronation chicken sandwich and their turkey sanchez sandwich (which you can order on white/brown bread or a white or multigrain ciabatta.

Great Partick Cafe: Excellent coffee (they brew different brands and types every week), delicious breakfast and lunch food at a reasonable cost. They also have very nice cakes. **I highly recommend their BLT! While they are open until 5 pm, like many Glasgow cafes, they stop taking food orders several hours before--sometime around 3:30 pm in this case. If you want to eat, make sure you get there before their food cut off time! This is NOT a work/study spot. It is a very small space with very few tables and a strict "no laptops" policy, and no wifi.

Excellent Indian Food "Tapas" place in Finnieston that is also quite well priced. It is great to sit in with friends but also equally good for take out. You can call in orders so they are ready for pick up.

SOME OF THE BEST INDIAN FOOD I HAVE EVER HAD. This place has many, many different types of "tikkas"--just look at their menu! It is pricier than some of the other Indian restaurants in the area but the quality is so high the couple of extra pounds is well worth it! This spot is also off of Great Western Road and thus is less than a 10 minute walk from the flat. You can dine in here (a bit more on the formal side) or order out. The staff are very kind and helpful and will cater to whichever you prefer. I highly recommend their chicken tikkas--karisma is especially good. The staff can advise you on which of their many tikkas will best suit you based on the flavors you like and the level of spice you can handle!

Broken Clock Cafe & Patisserie

Wonderful French inspired pastries by a lovely couple who are well versed in the art of pastry! This spot has excellent pastry and coffee, and free wifi, and thus is equally good if you are meeting up with people or having coffee and a pastry solo. The space itself is bright and uplifting and thus I find it really is a pleasant place to visit consistently--regardless of what the weather may be that day!

Hillhead

The Hillhead area of the city is the home of the stunning, historic University of Glasgow, which in and of itself, is a site to see! But this area is also home to two lovely parks (The Kelvingrove and the Botanical Gardens) and truly delightful cafes with wonderful coffee, cake and restaurants! This is the neighborhood where the flat is located and an area known for being beautiful, uplifting, and having many resources within reach (including grocery stores, Boots pharmacy, natural health care and food shops, cafes, bookstores, charity shops, library, etc!). See my list of recommended spots!
This is a beautiful historic residential neighborhood on a hill that is less than a mile from Hillhead (where the flat is located and where the University of Glasgow resides). If you are looking for a breath of fresh air, take a walk from the University Ave past Byres Road intersection and walk up Highburgh Road. Keep walking and you'll be heading to the heart of the neighborhood and the neighboring Downanside neighborhood (also very lovely and peaceful). Hyndland also has a train station so you can jump on the train there as part of your journey to Edinburgh or jump on a train from there to get to the City Centre. Hyndland does not have its own subway stop but both Partick Station, Kelvin Hall, and Hillhead are accessible from this location.

Finnieston area of Glasgow is also in the West End and is well known for its food and pub scene. It is just a walk across "The Kelvingrove Park" so is actually no more than a 15 minute walk from University of Glasgow. Spots I recommend for food include: Piece (Sandwiches) Roast (Sandwiches) Alchemillia (dinner--Otto Lenghi trained chef!) The Steamie (coffee, breakfast, and lunch) Accento Cafe (Sardinian Cafe with delicious paninis and sandwiches but also very limited hours--often closes at 3 pm!) Seb & Mili (coffee, breakfast & lunch, lovely breads) The 78 (vegan fast food) There is also a Roots and Fruits! There are many well loved pubs in this area including "The Finnieston"

Health Food, Vitamins, and Natural Products Store

This is a wonderful family owned shop for those who are looking for natural products, health foods, vitamins, and natural healing, medicinal items (ie) manuka honey. The owners are very thoughtful in the items the stock, taking in particular account items that will be helpful for those with allergies, different chemical sensitivities, and those trying to use natural means (rather than medicines) to help one heal during illness. This store also offers fragrance free and free and clear shower soaps, hand soaps, washing detergents, dishwasher tablets, and cleaning products. They also have bamboo and "bleach free" toilet paper and paper towel. I only stock my flat with fragrance free and "free and clear" products due to my allergies and chemical sensitivities and thus find this shop particularly helpful. If there is something they do not have in stock, the shopkeepers will always try to see if they can order it for you or find a equally helpful alternative. This is only minutes away from the flat and thus extremely convenient. I highly recommend.

Waitrose is located at the intersection of Great Western Rd and Byres Rd, on the Byres Rd side and right across from the Botanical Gardens. While they are more expensive than Tesco (small one also on Byres Rd, about 3 minutes walk from Waitrose), Waitrose is a full grocery store with lots of organic produce and foods. It is also so convenient it tends to be worth it to pay the wee bit extra. Waitrose also has a sushi bar with chefs that make sushi daily. I am not the biggest fan of Glasgow sushibut find the simple rolls at Waitrose are fresh and hit the spot. Fish counter there is excellent-- very fresh fish and helpful staff.

This place is the best place to get your meat. Waitrose has an excellent fish counter and quite good organic chicken but these Rodgers Butchers have great beef, red meats, sausages, and poultry (never had their pork but bet it is good as well!). Good to note though....their prices do fluctuate a bit. 1 pound of ground beef may be 50 p more one week than the next. If you want to stay within a specific price, it might be best to specify what you want to pay versus how much you want. "I'd like to get 4 £s worth of hamburger." If you are happy freezing meat, you can also purchase a large quantity for around 20 £. Very good deal if you feel comfortable wi freezing fresh meat.

Tranquil spots

Peaceful spots where you can eat, read, write, and reflect!
Lovely restorative park filled with different peaceful glasshours with an array of flowers and plants from all over the world. If you are looking for a peaceful beautiful spot, I would highly recommend visiting the Cloisters at UofG. There are many benches in the Quads that are right there so you can sit down and eat there, read, or just take a peaceful walk. If you walk to the front of the Quad as well, (aka the front of the building--when you entered, you were entering from the back), you will get a lovely view of Kelvingrove park and the Kelvingrove museum! Hanging out in the spot in the winter could be difficult as it gets a bit cold there at this time (the cloisters literally become a wind tunnel!). I would still recommend a quick visit in the winter if you can! The cloisters were featured in the Harry Potter movies & are generally a must see for all fans! You can also always grab a nice warm coffee after you journey! Nearby spots include Artisan Roast (amazing coffee!) and Roast (great sandwiches--they also serve coffee). If you are a member of UofG The Gilchrist Postgraduate Club is in the same building. They have nice soups, sandwiches and coffee.

Coffee & WIFI

This is a great spot for getting a very good cup of coffee & getting some work done. Artisan Roast is an Edinburgh company that roasts their own beans and really is excellent quality (you can buy a bag as well and make it at home!). They also have EXCELLENT and fast WIFI. Most people in the cafe are students and professors who are hard at work on their laptops. It can get a bit crowded in there but the cafe also has a loft space and generally you can find a spot if you are willing to wait just a short time (or if you ask someone if you can share a table--most people are willing).

Kothel has EXCELLENT FOOD and very FAST WIFI. It is a good place to work from for a wee while if you are looking for both. They are quite accommodating in this regard. They are also very WELL KNOWN FOR CAKE! They have at least 10 cakes available at any given time. Definitely have a slice of cake while you are there. This is one of the places that charges a bit more on their food items for sitting in than taking away so something to keep in mind if you are on a tight budget. Admittedly, I am less a fan of their coffee actually--I prefer Black Pine which is just 1 minute (a couple doors down). Black Coffee also has excellent coffee & is a good place for WIFI and laptop work.

Exercise Option!

Very good and complete gym that is a five minute walk from the flat and very helpful if you need some exercise! In addition to the complete gym, there is also a swimming pool here that includes a sauna and steam room. If you are at the flat on a long term stay, you can buy a monthly membership (which is generally reduced in price if you go on automatic debit ). If you are in Glasgow for just a short stay, they do have daily and weekly rates that might fit your needs. Definitely let the front desk know the length of time you will need so they can offer you the best plan. Use Kelvinbridge Station Subway on Great Western Road (7 minute walk from the flat) Or Hillhead Subway Station (8 minutes from the flat) If you are going to the City Centre, Kelvinbridge stop is one stop closer to the Centre. If you are going to Partick (or trying to reach Scotsrail station from Partick, which is the closest train station to the flat), you can take either subway stop but Hillhead is one stop closer.

Edinburgh by Train

There are many trains to Edinburgh each day. From the flat, it is easy to get to Edinburgh as there are two stations within 1 mile from Hillhead. The closest (and fastest) train option is to take the Subway to Partick subway/train station (from Hillhead two stops to Partick) and jump one of the trains to Edinburgh (Waverly Station) from there. If you fancy a walk before boarding the train, you can walk up to Hyndland Station and take the train to Edinburgh from there. If you like coffee, I strongly suggest you buy a cup at the Milkman Cafe located behind Waverly on the "Old Town" Side.

Edinburgh by Bus

Megabus has many Glasgow to Edinburgh buses each day. From the flat, take Kelvinbridge Subway to Buchannan Street and walk 5 minute distance to the Buchannan Bus Station (behind Glasgow Royal Concert Halls building). The bus takes 1 hour, 15 minutes to 1 hour, 30 minutes to get to Edinburgh Bus Station in New Town. The more in advance you buy your bus ticket, the cheaper it is (as little as 4 GBP). Megabus does not give refunds so make sure to stick with your date best you can! Coffee nearby? Laboratorio Espresso in Glasgow City Centre Fortitude Coffee in New Town, Edinburgh

Ubers are great in Glasgow--very reliable, fairly affordable (some times the cost is higher due to their being more demand) for the most part and definitely a good way to get to places that are too far out of reach from the subway or trains. (Or if it is just a really difficult day weather wise).
