Cocktail Bars

We are spoilt for choice to get a good cocktail these days in Newcastle.. so head out & explore town !
This super chilled Tiki bar has a fun vibe with passionate bar staff. Often with live music. Worth checking out if you fancy something different. You could easily walk past it, it’s just a couple of doors down from Chemist Warehouse in Hunter Street Mall. A very short stroll down the hill & around the corner!

I love this place! Mainly for the atmosphere & vibe. Often we will go during Happy Hour for cocktails & some tapas to share. They also have a cheap lunch menu. A cool place to go before or after Blue Kahunas if doing a bar hop. Only a few doors from each other. It’s not an overly big place, so if there are a few of you and you know you want to go at a certain time, it might be worth booking.

Fun 80’s / 90’s Style Bar. A casual small bar - Literally around the corner serving Cocktails, beers, wines etc & Toasties with Console Games! Haha. If dining after dinner & wanting dessert, or simply something sweet, I’m told the ‘Gaytime’ Cocktail is delicious (I haven’t tried that one yet!). Worth heading in, again... for something different.

* Has not reopened as yet post COVID * Literally located on the water of Newcastle Harbour, it’s a great spot to watch the working harbour and enjoy cocktails! My personal favourites are the Fire in the Sky & Release the Kraken. Delicious !! This is the sort of cocktail bar that you can go to super dressed up and feel like you have been somewhere special! (Although you can totally rock in if just walking along the foreshore and want a drink or lunch) They have live music a few nights a week also. Personally I think it’s best to go here while you can see the view. They have a food menu, but I have only ever tried some simple breads & Olives so cant really comment. > Please call ahead as I am not sure if they have re-opened since COVID

Food scene

We are very spoilt to have John, Chef Ryan and the crew literally over the road at Bolton Street Pantry. Their coffee is great and their food - excellent! So do yourself a favour and grab a coffee, breakfast or lunch during your stay! They also do takeaway. However it’s always a nice vibe to dine in, with super friendly service. I enjoy everything on their menu, however the Soba Noodle Salad would have to be a fave : ) If you are after a sweet treat they do delicious house made Portuguese Tarts and if sweetness is your thing, their French Toast is next level amazing.

One of, if not my fave pizza place in Newcastle. Good Italian menu with a focus on their wood fired pizza. Causal indoor and outdoor dining. Live DJ on Saturday nights and Live band on Sunday nights from 7pm - which is a lovely way to enjoy a Sunday night in Summer! The best part... it’s directly opposite Popolo - the BEST gelato! (Also in this guidebook & Owned by the same team). You cannot get a better dessert after Italian : )

Great Cafe with cool, chilled vibe & known for their coffee! Their simple looking menu is super tasty. Loads of flavour and just done really well. Loads of Plant Based options available. Mixed crowd - Everyone from business people having meetings to beach goers to mothers groups having a cuppa after a yoga class. (Next door) My personal lunchtime favourite is the ‘Green Veg Toastie’. Also open for Dinner at the end of the week & weekends. Easy place to take a book or read the paper.

The decor, atmosphere & views are excellent. Great for a classy, yet casual lunch overlooking the water, or you could make it a more dressed up special dinner. Mediterranean Style Menu with Tapas, Large Sharing Plates etc. They offer an Express Lunch Menu (Thurs to Sun) that is very inexpensive and worth soaking up the feel of their location.

A unique cafe / restaurant with most offerings made in house. The site has an interesting history, nice outlook over to the foreshore, light and airy with tasty meals. I have only had breakfast there so far, however the portions were big and unless super hungry we will share next time.

Hands Down - Best Gelato in Newcastle! (in my opinion anyway) Popolo Artisan Gelateria makes authentic Italian gelato on site and the best bit - it’s literally only just down the road! A true summer favourite... or whenever dining nearby, it is usually the pick for dessert. So their is often a queue... but it never takes too long & is always worth the wait! If you feel like yummy Italian then my advice is to go to Napoli (Italian Restaurant also in the guidebook) and once finished, walk directly across the road to get some Popolo Gelato to end a great meal. They are the perfect pair!

Momo’s is a brunch favourite of mine. Located in a beautiful old bank on the corner of Hunter and Brown Streets, which is an easy 10minute walk through the Hunter St mall. This cafe is light-filled and airy, the staff are always friendly with an open kitchen where all of their healthy options are made onsite. Momo’s is challenging the status-quo with their beautiful wholefood menu, laden with vegan, vegetarian and all-round healthy options. It’s got a cool vibe to just go and read a magazine and enjoy a Tumeric Latte, fresh Chai, Kombutcha or any of the usual cafe favourites or take a group of friends and enjoy brekky or lunch. I love just how fresh everything always is, their menu changes regularly with a focus on sourcing ingredients locally.

Authentic Italian, literally around the corner in their brand new & renovated restaurant on Watt Street. The owners were inspired by trips to Italy and particularly a family run trattoria with no printed menu just a small list of what was cooking that day. The emphasis was always on the customers, enjoying good, fresh, local rustic food and wine, which is what they have created for us here in Newcastle. Wednesday to Saturday nights. Must book in advance.

The ultimate beachside spot for your morning cuppa, super casual brekky or lunch. Rock up in your bathers, workout gear and grab a stool or sit on the benches or steps at the beach. The Kiosk at Newcastle Beach boasts some of the best latte sipping views along our spectacular coastline. Pick a spot right by the cafe where you can kick back and watch the waves, spot some whales and watch the world go by. Perfection! For a beach kiosk they have an extensive menu with some healthy options. You can get your hands on a healthy breakfast bowl, typical Aussie breaky rolls, toasties, shakes, burgers, wraps, fish and chips and of course, excellent coffee just qs local Novacastrians expect.

An upmarket restaurant offering delicious meals with excellent service. Dinner Wed - Sat, Lunch Fridays. Restaurant Mason has been doing Take Aways during COVID - which means it is the finest take away available. So if you feel like a night in with a simply beautiful meal, this is your answer. Located literally right on the water with floor to ceiling windows, it is a beautiful place to dine. Seafood is the main offering, however there are other options available. Slightly more expensive than other restaurants, however the food is delicious and location outstanding - so while on holidays, or particularly if celebrating - Scratchleys could be the perfect lunch or dinner during your stay in Newcstle

Full disclosure up front - I’m a Vego and have only dined here once. However, people do rave about it as a place that you would go with a small group of people who all love their meet and happy to enjoy a shared menu. Located next to Foghorn Brewery, this is the sort of place that you will not need lunch if you are having dinner here. Brazilian BBQ style where they bring the meat to carve at the table and when I was there, you could ask for as much as your tummy could handle.

Literally around the corner is Locks Paddock with excellent service & great flavours.. definitely worth a visit! Even if you sit at the bar to enjoy some small plates with a glass of wine. What style? This taken from an article, a quote from the owner “It’s got a share plate feel with a Spanish/Italian influence without being tapas. The two dishes that will be our signature dishes will be the Cacio e Pepe, served in a big cheese wheel, and our Carbonara.”

Swimming Hole

Sightseeing Also! Even if you don’t get in for a swim, you at least have to walk over and take a look at our beautiful Bogey Hole. My favourite time to go is during rough weather when the seas are up, it’s spectacular too see the waves smash into the cliffs. However, obviously when the weather is good - its great for a dip. Just be careful, it’s not patrolled and the waves can get you... and your belongings! The path to get to the Bogey Hole is via King Edward Park, which is a lovely walk that you can wind right down past Newcastle Beach, the Baths & around to Nobby’s Beach and the Break-wall.

The Newcastle Baths were opened in 1922 and are a local icon and institution for many Novocastrians. It is an easy 10minute walk, passing many cafes on your way. Even if you aren’t keen for a swim, it is still a lovely walk. Next to the baths is the Kids Ocean Pool. The baths are open all year round, subject to maintenance and cleaning. Until the end of 2020, the baths are closed each Wednesday morning for cleaning.

Mereweather Ocean Baths first opened in 1935 and continue to be a local favourite. Mereweather Surfhouse, Cafe & Pizza shop are based just near the baths as well as Bluedoor Kiosk. So plenty of places to get refreshments when you arrive. The baths are open all year round, subject to maintenance and cleaning. The cleaning schedule is uploaded as one of the photo’s of the baths. However you can also come back via Darby Street if you wanted to avoid the hills.

It’s super lovely to walk, or rent one of the Electronic Bikes and ride to the end of the Nobby’s Break Wall and back on a nice day. The actual Lighthouse only opens on special occasions these days, so you would have to google more if interested in visiting the Actual Lighthouse. You can also walk back along the sand of Nobby’s Beach... and take a dip too! It’s only a 5km return walk from the apartment, all on concrete walkways that are mostly flat... and you do pass a number of cafe’s and 3 x Beach Kiosk’s in the way : )

A beautiful scenic walk that honours our ANZACs. Positioned to take in picturesque coastline. Bars & Pubs

On a nice day this is a great venue to enjoy drinks and a meal on the wharf overlooking Newcastle Harbour. Indoor and outdoor dining, with upstairs and downstairs spaces. Live music on the wharf on weekends. Fairly standard style pub menu, however generally good food. Look out for Happy Hour & Cocktail deals and lunch specials etc that are usually always on offer. Simply walk down to the end of Bolton Street and cross the road over to the foreshore and you are there. Easy!

A craft beer pub with 21 Beers on Tap in a beautiful old building with super friendly staff who are always keen to answer questions and educate you on their beers. Always a nice casual vibe, often with live tunes on weekends it’s the sort of place that you can go and grab the Janga stack or another game and sit in a booth and stay for hours. Americana pub style food with wings, pizza and the usual classics. My favourite time to go to the Grain Store is when the weather is a bit lousy or you have had enough of the sun and want to escape the heat and head into the Air-Con.

Walk down two blocks and you are at the newest bar in the East End, making it an easy stop in for some drinks and snacks or a meal. The name comes from the original use of the beautiful old building and the walls are adorned with photographs showcasing Newcastle’s very own vibrant history. The food seems just as warm and hearty as you’d expect from a gastropub in the heart of our city. Expect all your typical pub favourites with the likes of cottage pie, fish and chips and of course the chicken schnitzel.

Neighbourhoods

Cooks Hill is just the next suburb along.. so easy enough to walk (at least one way and get an Uber back after dinner) it is home to one of Newcastle’s “Eat Street’s” Darby Street. Darby St is only short but has lots of restaurants, cafes and some retail boutiques and book stores tucked in there too. Turn into Bull Street for a locals fave coffee shop ‘Welsh Blacks’ a small art gallery and in my opinion the best pub in town: The Oriental (“the Ori” to locals). They have great pizza and usually live local bands on weekends. If you were going to check out the Art Gallery, Newcastle Library and / or the Newcastle War Memorial & Cultural Centre then they are all within meters of each other, just off Darby Street next to our lovely Civic Park.
