They have everything, great place to get fresh fruit and veggies. It's a great experience of a “real” market that is small enough to navigate without getting too lost!

The Huembes market is your best bet for finding Nicaraguan hand crafts in Managua, but because it's a large market you can also get a feel for what a real market is like, take a walk through!

Enough foreign essentials, canned goods, toiletries and food, not best option for veggies and fruit. This is the only Nicaraguan-owned grocery store chain. All other grocery stores (Pali, Maxi-Pali & La Union) are owned by Wal-Mart.

Drinks & Nightlife

Good restaurants, live music Thurs-Sun at many restaurants and on weekends you can take a tour boat out onto the lake. It is safe for walking around, even at night, a lovely picnic spot too. There are parks for kids, too.

Arts & Culture

The Museo Nacional is beautiful, has the colorful history of having been captured by Sandinista rebels in 1978 while Congress was meeting there, plus it offers tours in English for art, culture, natural & indigenous history.

Sightseeing

They have a miniature downtown Managua before the earthquake of 1972 which is fun to walk through, there is a play park for kids, a decommissioned airplane (for Nicaraguans who have never flown to have the experience), ice cream, roller blade shows on weekends, and replicas of the birth homes of Nicaragua's two biggest heroes: poet Ruben Dario and revolutionary August Cesar Sandino.

Parks & Nature

From the top of the ridge there are lovely views of Managua and Ciudad Sandino. This rural road is a safe place to see village life, and is great for popping in to a shop in someone's home for a gaseosa, to say hello and learn about local life. Great walks can be arranged from the village of Cuajachillo No. 2

A local guide can take you both and the canoe to a volcanic crater lake, Xiloa. Depending on wind it would take you about 3-4 hours to canoe around the whole edge of the lake, or you could head more directly to an area with a hot springs or another area with a nice beach for swimming. It is possible to swim at the place where you arrive and put in the canoe, but it is a bit muddy on the bottom. There are restaurants there for eating, or you can take a picnic lunch. The tourist area where you arrive tends to turn in to a big party on the weekends, so for quiet you must canoe out elsewhere! Once you leave the tourist area you will see herons, osprey and all kinds of water birds. The cost of getting you and the canoe out to Xiloa with driver is $20.

As the second most dangerous volcano in the world, Apoyeque is not for the faint of heart! But it is possible with a guide to drive up to the edge of the crater and hike around the crater. The hike down into the Laguna is steep and the trail is not good, please don't attempt without a guide. But a hike around part of the crater can be done in 2 hours round trip for gorgeous views of Momotombo Volcano, Apoyeque, Laguna de Xiloa, Lake Managua and Managua. The hike is a little up and down but nothing too steep. Wear good shoes, start as early as possible and bring at least 2 liters of water per person. To hike all the way around, go with a guide, expect a few treacherous spots, bring 2 gallons of water and it will take 6-7 hours. Well worth the views.
