AN EXCITING AND SIGNIFICANT LANDMARK IN THE HEART OF SOUTH AFRICA'S GARDEN ROUTE, this multiple award-winning WILD OATS Community Farmers' Market is located on the outskirts of the tiny coastal town of Sedgefield, (see map) adjacent to the beautiful Swartvlei lake-lagoon. Now in it's 15th year, this small, rustic but internationally famous farmers' market continues to attract the enthusiastic attention of proud locals and discernng travellers who consistently return for more of its festive fare. What this initiative has achieved is the blending of people from diverse backgrounds, uniting urban and rural in a mix where important educational experiences about local food sources, nutrition, environmental awareness and agricultual issues all blend into an unusual festive spirit of community. EVERY SATURDAY MORNING THROUGHOUT THE YEAR (from 7:30-12 noon summer; 8:00-12 noon winter) COME RAIN OR SHINE, this authentic producers market is brimming with the choicest locally-produced foods, both the take-home and breakfast variety. Including free-range meats, chicken, lamb, dairy and cheese, the market also specializes in fresh-from-the-field veg, freshly baked and bottled goods, as well as a wide variety of fresh-off-the-coals breakfasts. The market also proudly offers the many plants and flowers of the unique Southern Cape Floral Kingdom, propogated by local plant specialists.

Where are we situated?- So much to see in our area.

Lying on the other side of Knysna’s Western Head, nestled on the shores of the Indian Ocean in a quiet, lazy bay, residents describe Brenton on Sea’s beauty as the coast that Knysna doesn’t have, and in reality, Knysna lies on a lagoon, the rough seas making itself heard only at the Heads. Brenton on Sea lies virtually encircled by the Goukamma Nature Reserve, its slopes rich with fynbos, only 500 kilometres from Cape Town and 60 kilometres from the airport at George. The little community derives its name from the fragile free-flying butterfly, the Brenton blue, occurring only on the south-facing slopes of coastal fynbos at Brenton on Sea. Human disturbance in nearby Natures Valley led to the final disappearance of this beautiful specimen during the 1980s, only to re-emerge in 1991 in Brenton on Sea where the Brenton Blue Butterfly Reserve has been proclaimed. The Brenton blue butterfly, evident in late October until December, lives within one hectare of asteraceous coastal fynbos and its larvae depend entirely on the lower side of the leaves of Indigofera erecta for their food. Other than catching a glimpse of the butterfly, Brenton on Sea’s golden sands are an invitation to sunbathe, fish and stroll the shores. The cliff tops provide ample whale and dolphin watching opportunities in season and paragliding is a popular pastime for obvious reasons. Brenton on Lake has a jetty for launching boats and canoes, and the Knysna forests and the Goukamma Nature Reserve, which includes a 14 kilometre coastline, offer glorious walking and hiking opportunities.
The Brenton blue butterfly, evident in late October until December, lives within one hectare of asteraceous coastal fynbos and its larvae depend entirely on the lower side of the leaves of Indigofera erecta for their food. The home of one of the rarest butterflies in the world, the Brenton Blue Butterfly Reserve, is marked by a single signpost. Although the Brenton Blue Butterfly Reserve effectively came into being in early 1998, it was only proclaimed as a Special Nature Reserve on 4 July 2003. Knee-high poles indicate the boundary of the nature reserve. The site extends over approximately 2ha and contains a mixture of coastal fynbos and coastal forest. The Brenton Blue shares its home with a wide variety of other insects, as well as mammal and bird species. The vegetation in the reserve is a complex mosaic of candlewood thickets and asteraceous fynbos. The reserve contains a large population of the food plant of the Brenton Blue butterfly, a small plant in the pea family with pink flowers. NEED TO KNOW WHERE Brenton On Sea, Garden Route. WHEN Strictly by appointment only The reserve is under the control and management of the Brenton Butterfly Trust and no visitors are allowed on an ad-hoc basis. However there are limited tours of four people each twice a day from 5th to 25th November and 5th to 25th February each year, when the butterflies are active. The tours are at 12:00 and 13:00 and only if sunny and relatively wind free. HOW MUCH Prices on request. TELEPHONE Dr DA Edge +27 (0)44 381-0014 in business hours only (08:00 to 17:00).

The Start of Fishermans Walk. Fisherman's Walk. A spectacular coastal walk - on your doorstep - and one of Knysna's best (and least-known) whale- and dolphin-watching destinations. Fishermen's Walk follows the contour at the top of the cliffs above Jaap se Baai and The Block here in Brenton-on-Sea. Thesen Islands make safe, tranquil suburban living a reality in a world of urbanisation, hustle and bustle. This secure estate is situated on an award-winning Blue Flag marina in the heart of Knysna, which remains one of the Garden Route’s favourite destinations for its natural vistas, and its abundance of top-notch wining, dining and shopping. Thesen Islands comprises 19 man-made islands that are linked by bridges that arch over the pristine waterways. There are 512 free-standing homes and 56 trendy apartment suites. During the year, only about half of these are occupied. However, come holiday season (December and January), the islands are a vibrant hotspot of activity as visitors from around the world take advantage of the central locale and the awesome facilities within the boomed community. The design of the houses is somewhat regulated, and they all display a colonial maritime style. This is particularly fitting as Knysna has an important maritime history, as well as a context in the world of timber. There are private beaches that are only open to those staying on the island, making them safe enough for children to while away sweltering summer days, just meters from the houses. The park includes an exciting maze, veggie patch, bird hide, and plenty of swings, slides, jungle gyms and other toys or activities. The bird hide reveals a treasure – a spot in which the spoonbills, sacred ibises, plovers, herons, Egyptian geese and others live in melodious harmony. For those wanting to enjoy something more physical, there are two all-weather tennis courts, a squash court, an 18-hole putting green, permanent volleyball posts on the beach, and cricket practice nets next to the clubhouse. Locals love walking, jogging and cycling around the island too, and there are yoga classes at the clubhouse several times a week. The Thesen Harbour Town includes a number of restaurants (including Sirocco’s, Col’Cacchio and Tapas), boutique stores, salons, corporate offices, speciality stores, and a great central play area for little ones. All of the facilities are just a stroll away from the homes on the island, many of which sit perched on gorgeous waterways. Watching the paddlers and boaters come past, drinking in the views of the lagoon and the Heads in the distance, and breathing in the fresh ocean air combine to create idyllic conditions; perfect for a weekend getaway, a private honeymoon, or a long summer holiday with the family.

Adventure in and around Brenton-on-Sea

Lots to keep busy and to explore!
SANDBOARDING WITH DUNE ADVENTURES Knysna Sandboarding is Garden Route activity run by Dune Adventures who have daily guided tours to experience the thrill of sandboarding. The tour starts from the Brenton-On-Sea carpark in Knysna. It is in a central location, a short drive away from George, Wilderness, Sedgefield and Plettenberg Bay. The trip is well suited for families, beginners and seasoned snowboarders. Sandboarding is much like snowboarding where a board is strapped to your feet and the rider is able to turn, carve and stop themselves as they ride down the sand dune. Snowboarders will feel at home on sand and will get a kick out of boarding in shorts in the sun. It is possible to sit down on the boards which makes it easier for children as young as 3 and a half years to join in on the action. The oldest rider so far has been 76. You will be accompanied by trained guides who will instruct you on what to do at the dune. Sandboarding involves walking up the dune and riding down. With no lifts on the dune you will find our dune is high enough and surprisingly easy to turn in the soft good quality sand which is forgiving when you fall. The dune is in a special location with great scenery. Non boarders are welcome to come along where there is a comfortable semi sheltered spot to enjoy and photograph the activities and adventure. It is a perfect thing to do in Knysna on hot, cold or windy days. All you need to bring is shoes, water, hat and sunscreen to enjoy the day out. Most locals know this by now.. the weather can change instantly at any time. Best advice is to always wear layers, keep a light jacket and hat in the car! Sunscreen is a must (even when cloudy weather prevails). Windy conditions are also unpredictable - tie your hair back and keep it simple :) Keep your style simple, comfy and classy and you'll fit right in! Dressing down is what Knysna is all about.
