La Rhumerie de Chamarel is one of the rare distilleries still in activity to cultivate its own sugarcane. They are carefully selected and grown exclusively for the production of the Chamarel Rums: here lies the first secret of its quality. The harvest is done by hand, without ever burning the crops, and extends between July to December. The identification of the various crops and their traceability will allow the Master Blender to select the finest lots for the White Rums and the Old Rums. The freshly harvested sugarcane will be transferred within 4 hours to the Distillery to preserve its freshness and aromas. The first pressed sugarcane juice will be filtered, then taken to 25HL stainless steel vats to initiate the alcoholic fermentation. Our selection of yeasts and our controlled parameters will allow the development of a unique aromatic bouquet.

THE ADVENTURE BEGINS HERE …Once lusted after as much as gold, as much sought after as Indian spices, as sweet on the palate as silk is round a woman’s neck, sugar has enjoyed an extraordinary existence, leaving a profound impression on the history and identity of Mauritius. Travelling through the museum, visitors learn about the deeply intertwined history of sugar and Mauritius, how it has all led to the harmonious, smiling and multicultural society it is today.

Gris-Gris, a light wind sweeps your hair and this immaculate view stuns you – you are facing this sea – so blue – which looks like a beautiful fresco. But where did this region get its name from? No need to let your imagination wander. A placard tells more about this place at the entrance of the spot. It is said that between the barrier reef and the cliffs there is a rock that resembles a nun praying. For those who have a fertile imagination, they can also see in gri-gris the silhouette of a witch doing witchery. Gris-Gris was also the name of Abbee de la Caille’s dog, who came to the Isle of France in 1753. The poet Jean Toulet made it an ode by describing Gris-Gris as a “Sweet beach where my soul was born, Savanne in flowers that the ocean soaked in tears and sun of flame.” Visiting the beach in September 1886, the poet Paul Jean Toulet found the place full of “terror and fatalism not without sweetness. ” Not far from the Gris-Gris beach, you can see Chez Rosy’s restaurant, held by Rosy Gounden. You cannot leave Gris-Gris without visiting its cliff, known as La Roche qui Pleure. It got its name from the permanent runoff of sea water and the rumbling of waves against the rock. Gris-Gris has a lot of anecdotes around it. It is said that La Roche qui Pleure creates this illusion of tears flowing from the cliffs when the waves retreat there and that strangely, the features of the poet Robert Edward Hart appear as sculpted in the rocks by erosion. The absence of a coral barrier, the basaltic rocks and the powerful action of the waves have shaped amazing shapes that you will not find anywhere else.

The seven colored earth is a natural phenomenon and a prominent tourist attraction. The colors evolved through conversion of basaltic lava to clay minerals. It is a relatively small area ofsand dunes comprising sand of seven distinct colours (approximately red, brown, violet, green, blue, purple and yellow).
