Getting Around

This is the Bus Depot for Santa Elena and is about 1.5 hours from my house. Across the street is the closest North American style Supermarket. You can change buses here and get the local city buses for La Libertad and Salinas which have a combined population of 350,000. They have a big style mall and Salinas has a nice but tiny beach which is also packed hard to see the sand.

Neighborhoods

This is the quintessential Ecuadorian Coastal Town with a mixture of locals and expats. By the main bus stop on the highway is the best fruit stall in the area and vendors are there every Friday selling meat and fish on the opposite of the road.

The quintessential Ecuadorian Coast Town. Best fruit vendor in the area, and right across the highway is the excellent roadside market for poultry and meat. Market does not have any refrigeration so best you get there by 8am and get back to my house pronto, 20 minutes by bus and fare is $1:50 and 75 cents for 65 and over. Grocery store is about 500 meters away from the market, large by Ecuadorian standards but would be like a small convenience store to North Americans. If you are into surfing walk down to Outdoor Ecuador and check them out for Surfing and Spanish lessons.

Real Party Beach Town a lot quieter in the morning as clubs stay open to 5am, after noon things start to pickup. Lots of restaurants various prices. A lot of the restaurants do not have bathrooms, check first. Best restaurant in town is Spondolus but hours are very quirky. Great for people watching. Do not recommend it for people who like things are little quieter, Olon may be a better choice for you

The main road in Porto Lopez looks something like an Asian town asthe street is full of tuktuks. Very good supermarket and store on the main street. But the real charm of the town is the street in front of the beach and harbor . Has a Mediterranean feeling and very laid back. Great place to have lunch. There are scuba diving and snorkeling outfitters here. Learn to dive here. About an hour and 45 minutes by bus from my houses.

Known as the Poor Mans’ Galapagos. Twenty miles off of Porto Lopez by boat and that is where most tours originate from. See the blue footed boobies and amazing frigate birds. Some tours have a swimming and snorkeling option and swim with the sea turtles. There are also whale watching excursions and usually June to October is when they are in the area. This island is nature at its pristine best.

Food scene

The boats depart here from Porto Lopez for Isla Plata and the restaurants and cafes have a kind of innocent charm far from the maddening crowds and the food looks good.

Samgöngur

Buses are great but Taxis are cheap.

Have never had a problem in Ecuador but if it is getting dark it may be safer to grab a cab. If it is possible try to pick one up at their depot. If you have to flag a cab do not get in if you don’t like the look of the driver or if there is another person in the cab.
Hvað á að taka með

You are at the equator be sun smart.

Bring sun screen from home and twice what you think you will need. Sunglasses and a wide brimmed hat. A small bottle of lotion can cost up to $25.00 as Ecuadorians do not use it. There is no Walmart around and you do not want to be schlepping around on the bus to get these things. Walmart Sport SPF 50 is around $7.95 for a good sized bottle and rated second in protection by Consumer Reports and first in value.

Flying into Guayaquil.

A lot of the flights from North America get into Guayaquil after 4pm and as late as midnight. If you get thru customs around 4pm you should be able to get a cab right away and you tell them you are going to Montanita price should be no more than 85.00. If your flight is late best to book hotel to stay over and you can take the bus in the morning for $7.00 .(3 hours) Cab to hotels is $5.00 and from hotel to Terminal Terrestre ( Bus Station). I have stayed at 3 hotels by the airport. Highly recommend Mundial City via The other is Dreamkapture Hostel funky younger crowd no AC just fans but clean
