Sightseeing

With over 1000 years of history and the ancient village centre with its traditional green facades, Urk is often referred to as the ‘Pearl of Flevoland’. It is a dynamic and distinctive fishing village, where you can still experience that authentic island feeling and where the distinctive Urk dialect is still widely spoken. It’s a great place to enjoy a stroll through the small streets and old alleys or ‘ginkies’ as they are known locally. Say ‘Urk’ and you think fish. This is your opportunity to indulge in some delicious smoked eel or one of the other varieties of fish dishes available in the welcoming port.

Urkerdag

Urkerdag is a local holiday that takes place every year on the former island of Urk. It serves to celebrate and keep alive the local culture, folklore and costumes of the fishing village. Over the years, the party itself has become a phenomenon where not only the traditional costume is worn and celebrated, but there is also a look back at older Urker crafts and customs. The holiday has no fixed date since the day always takes place on the day before Pentecost, which is a different date each year.
