Welcome to the Café... If you're looking for some great food, tasty beers, exquisite wines or just a beautiful, velvety cup of the finest coffee, then look no further than the Café Continental in Gourock. And after a hard day at the office, why not pop down in the evening and enjoy some fine music, live entertainment, test your general knowledge, or just dance the night away. The story so far… The Star Hotel was purchased in 1899 by co-owner Roland Toma’s grandparents. Initially, the building was little more than a cottage, until the early 1900′s, when it was converted structuraly into the present shape. The Toma family built on the cottage as it stood, adding another two floors on to the existing cottage whilst continuing to trade from the bottom floor. When the new roof and second floor were water tight, They knocked the existing roof out and added first floor. In 1907 “The Star Hotel” became “The Continental Ice Bar” and served delicious ice cream to the residents of Inverclyde until 1918, when the First World War ended. You can still see the original sign from “The Ice Bar” era being proudly displayed above the restaurant area in the Cafe today. After the great war, The Toma’s changed the name once again to “The Continental Cafe”. They traded happily for many years, supplying wonderful service, ice cream and ginger beer to the locals of Gourock and the surrounding areas up until the break of World War II. The Second World War brought a darker period for the Toma family when Lorenzo Toma was interred on the Isle Of Man as an “Enemy Alien”. During his time here he became friends with one Roland ‘Tiny’ Rowland, who was later to become the Chief Executive of the conglomerate Lonrho in 1962, and then the chairman of ‘The Observer’ newspaper in 1983. Lorenzo named his son after the good friend he spent his time with on the Isle Of Man. During WWII, The norwegian Navy set up base on the first floor of The Cafe, whilst the charity ‘Toc H’, an organisation who were instumental in the creation of todays Blood Transfusion Service, had a branch on the upper floor. There were regular entertainments at the cafe during these years and one favourite child performer was Jimmy Logan. Jimmy lived with his aunt, Annie Ross, next door and would take cover in the air raid shelter beneath the cafe during blitz time. The family were invited to Eamonn Andrews’ “This Is Your Life” in April 1973, to celebrate Jimmy’s life and career, and the country were treated to the stories of his time at The Continental Cafe. In the shadow of WWII, Lorenzo returned to his family in Gourock and the cottage he had nurtured into a successful local cafe. The Toma family continued to serve the community and put smiles on the faces of adults and children alike for many years to come. During the 1950′s Lorenzo was acting as a scout on behalf of his beloved AC Milan and frequented football games throughout Scotland on the lookout for fresh talent to be snapped up by the Italian giants. Glasgow Rangers players of the day frequented the cafe regularly, and in 1959 Rangers played host to AC. Lorenzo was the official host & interpretor for the visiting team. In 1985, Roland, and friend Brian Stewart, converted “The Continental Cafe” to it’s current trading name “Cafe Continental”. They focused on turning the succesful cafe, into an even more successful bar & restaurant, removing all facilities for making ice cream and replacing them with Versace tiles and stylish decor. The Cafe ambience and style has impressed screenwriters and producers, being used in the TV drama “Shadow Of The Stone” and movies “Gregory’s 2 Girls” and the Harvey Keitel drama “Where The Buffalo Roam”. And a list of celebrities have called our bar home including Domenick Allen, guitarist with Foreigner and musical director for Elton John & Liberace, His one time wife,Charlene Tilton of Dallas fame, and regular patron Abi Titmuss who stated in an interview that The Cafe was her favourite place to eat while visiting her parents in Scotland. The Cafe has gone on from strength to strength, and in doing so, has managed to embody a coffee shop at breakfast time, a Bar/Restaurant throughout the day, and a Bar/Disco/Live Venue/Comedy Club in the evening. All in the course of a 16 hour working day.

WELCOME TO THE SPINNAKER HOTEL The Spinnaker is a charming waterfront listed property only 40 minutes west of Glasgow. We offer a warm welcome, fabulous views, great casual food and really comfortable accommodation. The Spinnaker is a family owned and run business. We are proud of what we do and we strive to make your meal or stay enjoyable, relaxing and one that you will wish to repeat. ABOUT THE SPINNAKER HOTEL The Spinnaker Hotel is a located in Gourock on the main coastal road between Greenock and Largs. The Victorian style building dates back to the 1920’s. Previously known as the Fairlight it changed ownership and its name in the early 1970’s. It’s been in the same family ever since. The hotel expanded from 3 bedrooms to 9 in 1998 incorporating the adjacent residential property which also created additional dining and socialising space. The entire downstairs of the business was refurbished in late 2016 / early 2017. With the assistance of professional interior designer Catherine Wilson the stylish but not overly modern revamp has kept the traditional homely feel that the Spinnaker has always been known for. We have no jukeboxes or fruit machines but they are not needed. The present owner is Stewart McCartney and along with his team hope to provide you with an enjoyable and memorable experience for all the right reasons when visiting the Spinnaker.

Greenock's hidden gem After a £2 million refurbishment that kept the Museum closed for 3 years, it's open again. The glass ceiling has made the atmosphere lighter and the exhibits appear brighter now, helping the visitor to enjoy the collections more easily. The Museum opened its doors in 1876, thanks to the funding of James McLean, a timber merchant. It contains various collections of Scottish and British Art and not only. Among the highlights, it's a Mummy Cartonnage from Herakleopolis Magna and a temple stone of Bast at Bubastis. The Museum is connected to the Watt Library. There is a small shop, free internet, beautiful sofas for a break and very polite people at the reception desk, ready to answer your questions. Admission is free and the opening times are: 10.00' to 16.00' from Wednesday to Saturday.
